Strange but useful

This book comprises a very thorough introduction to the Finite Element Method for diffusion-advection problems and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The authors' style is strange and often very bizarre but the subject is presented with full details. Many different weak forms of the Navier-Stokes equations are presented and compared. From a practical point of view one will find a great deal of recipes on what elements to use, different strategies on mesh generation, time integration, etc. One will also find a useful discussion on the advantages/disadvantages of FEM compared to some well established finite diffrences and finite volume methods for incompressible flows.

A must have for anyone willing to understand the subtelties of FEM

First of all, if you're looking for an "operational book" of FEM - the ones who have all the matrices and methods step-by-step - don't buy this one; choose Reddy - The finite element method in heat transfer and fluid dynamics instead. Or even Hughes - The Finite Element Method should attend your needs.

But this is a very special book, written for those who really want to understand the difficulties and advantages of the Finite Element Method. It makes very very nice comparisons to the so called Control Volume Finite Element Method (the approach currently implemented in Ansys CFX), and it does a very good job in convincing you to follow the finite element, instead of the finite volume school. It is many times funny - at least I cought myself laughing loudly about the audacity and informal way in which the author gives you arguments to shut the finite volume advocates mouth when they say that "FEM Methods aren't conservative". Get this book and you will know how to answer them !

About the Author

Dr George C. McGavin is the Assistant Curator of the Entomological Collections in the Oxford University Museum, one of the worlds' largest insect collections. He is also Lecturer in Biological and Human Sciences at Jesus College, Oxford and a member of the Expedition Council and Advisory Committee of the Oxford University Exploration Club. In addition to scientific papers, he has written many books on bugs and other insects for adults and children and is also known on radio and television. He eats insects regularly and currently has three insect species named in his honour. Illustrations by Richard Lewington, highly-respected and renowned insect artist

Essential Entomology,

This text is an excellent assembly of the fundamentals of entomology and a worthy contribution to the field. However, it is no Tripplehorn, the truly essential introductory entomology text. It lacks an identification key, but provides a wealthh of order-level introductory information. This book would serve as a good supplemental text. A nice addition to a personal entomology library.

Very good basic introduction to identifying insects

This is a very good practical introduction to the major orders of insects, for people who don't have a strong background in advanced biology and don't want one. It does not bog down on extensive keys within the orders, just gives key details about each order.

I am volunteering in a university insect collection lab, and this book gives me the information I most need without bogging down in a lot of information I don't need. It is however, a better resource for someone just learning to do insect identification in a university lab, than for instance the Peterson bug guides, which I found to be the next best option.

I showed this book to the professor who runs the insect collection, and he said this is a good book. He said that if all of his volunteers knew the contents of this book, he would be very happy.

Unfortunately, the authors include everything , burying fascinating anecdotes (a tea party with Groucho Marx in 1977; the 1978 filming of 65 naked women on bicycles in Wimbledon Stadium to promote "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Race") under endless details. Few readers will want to know the musicians' high school grades or where the band changed planes on the way to a concert. On the other hand, they will want to learn more about the enigmatic Mercury, whose flamboyant camp act transformed four heavy metal musicians into skilled performance artists with worldwide popularity. Given the authors credentials, it isn't suprising that there is a certain bias--"the only thing the press concentrated on when writing up news of the opening of the world's biggest ever rock festival, was the 'near riot' . . ." The book does contain an impressive 35-page discography/videography, useful for music collectors--in 1991, Queen became the second most collectible band after the Beatles. Photos.

This is the kind of plodding, detail-oriented, homogenized narrative you would expect from the band's international fan club president and de facto discographer, positions held by authors Gunn and Jenkins, respectively. Mostly uninspired, this first significant Queen biography to be written under the aegis of the band could have benefited from more guidance. Until Freddie Murcury's AIDS-related death in 1991, Queen had literally conquered the world in terms of concert attendance, album sales, and artistic innovation during the group's 20-year career. Unfortunately, the narrative lacks the band's energy and sags under the weight of a this-is-the-band and, especially with regard to record chart activity, day-by-day approach. Still, anyone who can remember where he or she was upon first hearing "Bohemian Rhapsody" will probably love this work. Recommended where pop-music biographies are in demand.

There are two kinds of showbiz bio: the sleazy tell-all and the breathless tribute. This Queen chronicle is definitely of the second type. If you're looking to find out how Freddie Mercury contracted HIV, it's not for you. If you care about the band's formation and early appearances or the arduous process of obtaining a recording contract, though, it's a fine resource. Devout fans Gunn and Jenkins became privy to the group's inner workings, and although their book was not commissioned by Queen, the band gave them plenty of cooperation. But any criticism in itfor instance, when Gunn and Jenkins compare Queen's extremely familiar Bohemian Rhapsody to the ubiquitous Led Zeppelin warhorse, Stairway to Heavenis unintentional. So it's hardly surprising that Gunn and Jenkins also pay scant attention to the scary underside of the rock music business or to the sexual innuendos of the band's presentation. Perhaps the sleazy side of Queen will emerge in the next book on the band. Mike Tribby

For the most part, this book reads like a list of dates and locations. A lot of interesting details of the Queen story are left out. A casual fan of Queen's music won't find this very interesting. This one is for the true fans only.

Queen Rule The World!

The complete and virtually unabridged biography of the greatest band of all time is a must-have for any fan. It details the lifes of Freddie, Brian, John and Roger from their respective births, and leaves little out (apart from the malicious gossip that so frequently found in the tabloid papers about them).
The book is written by Jacky Smith (nee Gunn), the manageress of the Offical International Queen Fan Club (which is now the longesy running fan club of all time) and Jim Jenkins, a long time fan who was at most of the concerts Queen ever gave, so the authority from both people is a good one. You cane expect everything in the book to be completetly factual, and absolutley respectful to Queen and their families.

It is the "final intention, thought, and realization of all buddhas," the "ultimate result of all yanas," the "great passage of all the Victorious Ones of the three times," and the "supreme highway of all yogis and yoginis." Together, these are known as the "Eight Greatnesses" of this tantra. Along the course of history, many great masters and practitioners have achieved full realization by engaging in the Secret Essence teachings. Today we are connecting with this very same path by studying, contemplating, and meditating on the nugget essence of the Dharma through these instructions. We are finally discovering the profound and mysterious secret that has been hidden from us for such a long time: the guhya garbha, or "secret essence," of the inherent nature of reality.

A Monumental Achievement is this Splendid Book which Opens the Gate to Wisdom

The Khenpos as teachers have created a monumental legacy to bring the King of All the Tantras to the West. They have opened the Gate of Vajrayana Buddhism for us and we just have to step into the pages of this book and then practice and actualize their precious teachings. The history of the Guhyagarbha Tantra as well as Tantra in general is presented. The outer and inner tantras are discussed. Particularly interesting are the teachings on the Bardo or Afterlife. Everyone wants to know what happens when we die and here, in this book, step by step explanations are discussed. The Zitro practices of the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities which appear after death are also fascinating topics. My favorite teaching is the culminating chapter towards the end of the book which guides students to practice this tantra which is also known as The Secret Magical Net of Illusion. This precious book by the Khenpos gives us the backround history, view, path and the ultimate way to enter the gate and pass through this samsara net of illusion. It is a monumental achievement in Vajrayana Buddhism and the Khenpos' gift of Dharma to the West. Pema Gadron

THE GREAT GUYAGARBHA, KING OF ALL TANTRAS! HO!!!

The Great Guyagarbha Tantra is the first direct teaching (first oral and then on paper) that directly teaches, DEFINES, and brings us that much closer to realizing what we actually are, and what all reality actually is. It is considered fundamental by ALL MASTERS OF ALL SCHOOLS of VAJRAYANA BUDDISM. To use the term “revelation” in its effect on me, is not over-stating or dramatic because its purpose is just that; to reveal to us the True-Nature that is the only absolute condition for everything. Now how on Earth can a teacher or teachers convey that?! Well, that’s where masters come into the picture. The authors of these Teachings on the Great Guyagarbha Tantra, are the Venerable Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. They speak in a way that is completely authentic to the teachings yet so beautiful, so simple, so straight forward. (LOL! I am almost in tears with appreciation at this very moment!) Yet also, because Khenpo Tsewang speaks English so beautifully, it is HE who is speaking to us in his own voice and at the same time translating Khenchen’s (Khenpo’s brother) native Tibetan in a perfect and enlightening manner. I know this because I have been fortunate to recieved their teachings in person. Alas, (and TRULY as equally important to mention here), is the editing. I mean, this is a book, but it sounds like I am describing an audio recording! That, my friends, is where the magic of the current editing and translation team of Pema Samye Ling (PSL) come into the picture. (dang…I’m about to get teary again!…Abide, abide…ok, I’m cool.) Anyway, originally these teachings consisted of two summer sessions for groups of students on retreat. The teachings were recorded culminating into countless hours of audio. That’s when this team of EDITING-ARTISTS created a seamless stream that feels as if you are ACTUALLY THERE. Really, this was my experience the first time I read it. I cannot even begin to get into the actual teachings here. They are too vast and perfect for a review but again I will say that it is THE fundamental teaching revealing to us the True-Nature of Phenomena exactly As-It-Is. It is currently my own daily study and will continue to be so indefinitely. I should also mention that each teaching, within this Teaching, is an entire meditation unto itself. So, there are probably a hundred (if not hundreds) of meditations in here. Any person along the Path should BUY THIS BOOK, absorb it, and allow it to naturally progress your realization.

The other two reviews existing at this time are exellent and I will just add my confirmation. Two weeks ago I finished another book from the same authors (Key to Opening the wisdom Door of Anuyoga). That book was a real blessing for me and I keep it and the authors in the highest esteem. I am delighted to have the opportunity to spend more time with them. It is REAL Quality Time! Having said that, I would like to add, that the level of these teaching is comparable to e.g. Albert Einstein's " Theory of Relativity" , so you would have to know a little bit about physics and mathematics already otherways the blessing will not materialize. To know in that context means embodied experience and knowledge, not just intellectual knowledge! As a matter of fact the loosing of the net of reference of the intellect is the whole point!

The best book on venture capital for startups yet written

The best book on venture capital yet written. After you get past Mr. Romans chest-pounding exercises (the first couple of chapters are egregious, but he recovers quickly) this book is more thorough, covers more topics, and is more specifically useful than any other. The guest chapters are also excellent.

Jeff Bussgang's book is better as "what do VCs really do / day in the life" and Tom Perkins & Tim Draper's books are interesting stories & histories but Mr. Romans book is the most practical book on VC for startups yet written. If you have to pick just one, this is it.

(PS - I am a Silicon Valley VC and was a startup CEO for 12 years before that.)

A very important book about a very important industry

Andrew Romans has written a very special book on the industry that I spent most of my years working in and have written about.
If you pick it up, I guarantee that you will learn a great deal about venture capital and how it works. Romans gives sound advice for entrepreneurs on how to select good venture capitalists, how to pitch them and how to make the best use of them as partners. The book is easy to read and explains a broad range of issues in a clear, concise and interesting way. If you are at all interested in the subject don't fail to read this book.

This Book Will Save You Time

The thing I like most about this book is that it clearly presents compelling reasons for how you should proceed about the entire exercise of raising capital - not just the mechanics of capital. It quickly covers all of the peripheral issues surrounding legal fees, board selection, who should participate in the round, etc. The book is concise about this.

If you want the biggest bang for your buck, and the shortest read time to broad competency on the topic, you'll buy this book.
