I pre-ordered this book in anticipation as I've seen Danilo deliver some great talks on the subject. Having already been very familiar with lambda and AWS in general I new chapter 1 and 2 would be a great refresher and help to reassure what I'd learnt. I hoped I'd learn lots more as the book went on and the book didn't disappoint, there's some excellent practical examples, well worth a read is you are dipping your toe into Lambda or looking to bulk up those skills and learn more deeply about complex items such as auth on the API gateway and how this works with Lambda.

excellent resource for serverless development

This is an excellent resource for getting started with serverless development .

Prior to reading the book, I had the impression that AWS Lambda was just a one-trick-pony tool for building one-off utilities like automatic image thumbnail generation or adding small pieces of server-side glue code for mobile applications.

In Chapter 1 my eyes were opened, as right from the beginning the book shows how you can create fully functional web and backend server equivalents just using the existing AWS services with Lambda to wire it all together with your own business logic.

The author makes good use of diagrams to help visualize the flows between services throughout the book. The initial diagrams show how the interactions between AWS Events and Lambda functions can be chained together to create sophisticated flows. These flows are not that dissimilar to the flows you might already be familiar with from reactive programming styles.

Chapter 2 quickly walks you through the process of building your obligatory Hello-World app and then subsequent chapters will progressively iterate to add more functionality, such as a web hooks and and security.

The book assumes you don’t know very much about AWS beforehand and provides a basic introduction to some of the other related AWS services you’ll need in order to build non-trivial services. With over 80+ AWS services, no single book could ever possibly cover all of the AWS services you could might use with Lambda. Instead, this book concentrates on the services you are most likely to use with Lambda e.g IAM, Cognito, S3 etc.

The book is divided into four main parts. Part 1 is a Getting Started guide. Part 2 is for Building and has a security theme (6 of the 8 chapters in this section are focused on security and authentication). Part 3 covers tools and strategies for Test, Deployment and Monitoring. Part 4 focuses on on integrations with external (non-AWS) services.

Each of the chapters are quite dense with content, so it’s not something you can maybe read and walkthrough in a single lunchbreak. But the content is progressive, slowly building on the code you already know, so before you know it, you’ve got some reasonably comprehensive examples working. The examples provided are either in the NodeJS or Python languages, so a familiarity with either of those would be helpful but not essential. Each chapter ends with a well thought out exercise so you can hone your skills. This is a nice touch that I’d love to see in more books.

The existing online documentation from Amazon on Lambda seems to concentrate mainly on either Reference-API themed pages or links to github examples. Both of these are certainly useful, but this book helps fill a void by actually showing you how to build up a Lambda based application from scratch and then secure it.

If you’re considering using Lambda in a commercial enterprise, then this book will definitely help as it has lots of meaty examples and a strong focus on security throughout.

This is not just a review of John Ford's "Deer Diaries', I could say exactly the same things about any of the three books he has written! Five star all the way! Interesting, humorous, well written, or any other good cliche. But, these are not cliches when it comes to John's books. They are inadequate at times. Easy to read, factual, a true peek into how the Maine Warden Service operated not too many years ago before political correctness and politics entered the game. Totally enjoyable! All three of his books, that is !!!

True events and thoughts from one of Maine's Finest.

I have read all three of John's books and have enjoyed all. I have shared the first two with friends where we now live who don't know John and all enjoyed the emotions of laughter and sadness that came with John's working life as a warden.

I think you have to know John to some degree, to fully appreciate,
that you are getting the real John Ford in how he speaks in normal conversation as well as his emotions in the wilder and crazy situations.

There is no doubt in my mind that as John was writing the drafts of these stories, he was reliving the emotions of the actual events.

Of course like any profession, you have to have walked in those shoes to fully appreciate the events and years John, Judy and family look back upon.

Although we are both retired from law enforcement from different states, we have known each other over the years and I wish we had the opportunity to have shared similar events.

Life was simpler

Great read, enjoyed the location descriptions along with the event description. Having been born and raised in Waldo County, but joining the Army and living in Washington State for the past 54years, I was able to really visualize the locations John was describing and it made the book that much more enjoyable.
His description of his Warden career makes one realize how much simpler life was in those years as compared to now, when we are supposed to live with"politically correct" decisions. It sounds like hunting in Maine has changed from how I remember it, where I spent hours and hours with my Grandfather and his

Excellent book

Full disclosure: I got a copy from the publisher to review

The book has 12 chapters full of useful tips.

The first chapter contains a brief introduction that may be useful to development managers. The second chapter works out a mathematical problem and contains an interesting refactoring exercise. This second chapter also beings the fabulous trend of including tests and verifications. So far things are useful but rather basic.

The third chapter is where the awesome begins. It builds a recursive descent parser for a subset of Markdown all with nice pattern matching.

The fourth chapter goes over option pricing. It was a very nice write up. Previously I had read F# for Quantitative Finance by Johan Astborg, and this chapter covers lots of ground. It didn't cover how one would go about calculating the Greeks but it did explain how to generalize for the calculation of path-dependent options. This would have been wonderful to read earlier in the year when my team was developing a few option pricers.

The next chapter discusses type providers and implementing them. It was an interesting read but I don't currently have a use for it.

Chapter 7 is about developing a Trading Application on WPF with MVC instead of MVVM. It incorporates Castle DynamicProxy and use pattern matching with discriminated unions for handling async/sync operations. It was a very very informative.

Chapter 8 is about the actor model and very useful. Chapter 9 was on building games with XNA and an interesting read as was the 10th chapter which dealt with social web applications.

Chapter 11 and 12 were very nice to read. Particularly, chapter 12 covers testing superbly.

I've some basic to intermediate knowledge in Functional Programming and was looking for some advanced concepts and where it is applied in real life. This book came and I was interested. This covers some of my expectations.

The book is also useful for those who love functional programming and want to build a case to convince peers and management to invest in functional programming. The first chapter helps you great in that aspect. It not only helped me in functional programming, the technique I learned helps in selling any other technology idea also. So, I feel it'll be useful.

This book has many code samples more than required. I really liked some concepts behind each idea more than looking for code samples which I can easily apply to other programming languages as well.

The authors have carefully chosen the areas where F# and functional programming in general excels well and have built examples in those areas.

The only downside I see is that the book is written by many authors, so you might feel there is a disconnect when jumping between chapters. At the same time, you might get different perspective depending on where you want to apply the knowledge. Though some of the chapters might not be useful for me as that domain is not where I work usually.

I just received Modern Manners today, and have spent over an hour perusing it. Although I admit I haven't read every word, I am very impressed with the book. The format is pleasing, interesting and makes for a quick reference for many situations. The book, co-authored by a renowned etiquette expert and her granddaughter, covers topics ranging from dress, posture, introductions, how to mingle, and even how to shake hands. These may seem to be very simplistic areas, until you find yourself in a situation and you don't know what to wear, how to introduce your boss to a friend, how to feel comfortable at a social/business function, or dining at a table where there's more silverware in front of you than in your momma's silver drawer! The book also gives relevant information about other cultures including greetings, dining information and conversation distances. All of this being very relevant as international travel and trade increases. Many of the suggestions in the book not only cover what is proper socially, but gives wonderful suggestions for those who want to make a positive impression in the business world. Manners may not ever go out of style, but they do evolve. Many of the rules from Emily Post and Amy Vanderbilt, even though perfect for their time, are outdated. Ladies, we may still want to be treated special by our husbands, boyfriends, and male friends, but being catered to by men in the business world is not going to help us get ahead. This book addresses this need and shows women how to step up and show ourselves as equals (standing when someone enters, offering our hands for a firm shake, etc.). Don't get the idea from the last comment that this book is just for females, it has beneficial information for all!
I think this would be an excellent book for young men and women about to go to college or who are in college and will be entering the business world soon or those already in the business world.

A perfect guide for today's world

Delightfully written. A perfect guide to figuring out our new and somewhat tricky tech filled environment. Not only hitting on our new world but also embracing our past with the importance of a proper handshake, eye contact and making those around us feel important and appreciated. It will be my go to gift for this season for my friends and their children.

Good Book

Before I bought it I felt kind of apprehensive because Liv Tyler is a coauthor (I tend to shy away from how-to books written by celebrities) but Liv Tyler's contribution to the book isn't that significant and the blurbs she does have on there are kind of cute. Johnson seems very knowledgeable about the subject. All in all the book is pretty comprehensive. My only major issue is that apart from the basics it does very little to cover social media and email etiquette (so if your looking for advice on that I don't recommend you buy it ).

not an easy read and not for everyone

this is a more clinical study of the studies of compulisive shoppers and compulsive spenders..it gives lots of data on numbers .since there are not a lot of books out there on this subject in a clinical setting is the reason
I bought it...I like it but it might not be for everyone at its price..I was lucky to get it used..
