About the Author

Beautiful photos and illustrations

Beautiful photos and illustrations. Clear step-by-step instructions. Lots of projects for every woodworker from complete novices progressing in difficulty to quite challenging and inspiring. The marquetry itself can be done with very few tools. Many of the projects can be mounted on objects found at hobby shops like Michael's. Otherwise, some woodworking skills and power tools are needed to complete the beautiful trays, boxes and other objects on which the marquetry are mounted (hence the "and beyond"). This book is a great reference source for any woodworker at every level of expertise. Ken really knows his marquetry and wood craft!

About the Author
John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked as a school psychologist and currently teaches educational psychology every year at the undergraduate level. In 2006, John received the University of Texas at Dallas Excellence in teaching award. His research has included publications in the Journal of Educational Psychology that focus on the contextual aspects of affectively-toned cognition and children's self-regulatory behavior as well as teachers' perceptions of children from divorced families. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Developmental Psychology and Child Development. Doesn't include Connect!

Bought this book for my psychology class...figured I'd save $10 off the bookstore price. Turns out I am spending $30 more because it doesn't include the Connect code I need. Buy this somewhere else!

It smelled funny and alot of the pages were stuck together

I rented it and when I received it it had a spill on the bottom corner of the whole book. It smelled funny and alot of the pages were stuck together. First time I ever receive a rental in such bad condition. Specially for the money I paid! I had no choice but to make it work since my class had started.

Book is great condition. Just didn't come with the access code needed for the class. I thought it would come with it for the hefty price I paid. Ended up having to spend more on the code in addition.

The Daddy Diaries by Joshua Braff

Jay and his wife Jackie recently moved their family to Florida from California for her job. Jay will stay home with the kids while she brings home the paycheck. He reflects on that occasionally but, overall, he embraces his role in the family.

Jay’s kids (13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter) take to their new location quite differently. His son is sullen and removed while his daughter has a new best friend and busy social life. My heart went out to Jay as he tried so hard to help his son who seemed to be very unhappy. Having raised a son I wondered if it was depression or the onset of puberty – not an easy time either way.

Through his diary notes we see Jay navigate a variety of activities and incidents in his new location. The acerbic and witty (and sometimes stereotypical) observations had me either cringing or laughing. I found his perspective on the way adult males embrace their situations as fathers (or not) interesting. Jay never quits trying to do the right thing – and he’s seen plenty of examples of how not to act.

The Daddy Diaries is a very quick and easy read about the importance of fathers and family in all its modern versions. Recommended to fans of contemporary family fiction.

Great prose, good read

I heartily recommend Joshua Braff’s newest novel. It’s not often enough I sample a few short pages and find myself immediately struck by the author’s voice. I felt as if I’d been plucked up and set down in Tampa Bay. Since Jay, Jackie, and their two children, Alex and Tara, had just left California (and I live in California) it was easy to relate to how different Florida environs would seem.

Jay is adjusting, trying to adapt to a new life as a full-time dad. His thirteen-year-old son seems alienated and doesn’t fit in at his new school. His wife is often out of town on business. The only family member who appears to be assimilating is their young daughter.

You don’t run across all that many realistic, caring fathers in fiction anymore. Jay tries to do right by his family. He is a man, and naturally approaches his role as caretaker in a masculine fashion, but he deals with his children with a tenderness that I found both admirable and touching.

The relationship between Jay and Jackie runs deep, and their love and commitment keeps them closer than most couples would be in their situation.

Although this is a tale about a family, the narrative arc supplies plenty of tension and kept me turning the page.

A relatable, refreshing and funny read - truly enjoyed this!

Writer does a great job of capturing his inner voice and those fleeting thoughts that help parents navigate through the drama of everyday family life. Sarcastic, yet honest and tender.

Book was a nice escape for me, and a good reminder that you need to re-calibrate from time to time to get back to what is most important.

Highly recommend!

AMATEURISH, ELEMENTARY, TERRIBLE CHILDRENS BOOK !

I know I’m going to get blasted for this review, but the truth is the truth.
This book was a real shocker for me, especially ( if you can believe) Amptone recommended it!
Great book for KIDS, starting into the hobby (or art) of guitar.
Nor recommended for the seasoned pro, or advanced gear head.
Covers the obvious. It will insult your intelligence.
Stupid questions are posted & answered like:
“Why does my guitar keep breaking strings?”
Or, “what is the difference between a single 12” cabinet & a 4x12 cabinet?”
Are musicians really this dumb?
What’s really interesting is Eddie Van Halen posts a little endorsement statement
on the back cover…......Hmmm…… Really??

Packed with Info
By too many books
As far as I can tell, the author has a question and answer type column in Guitar World magazine and this book is a compilation of his column from over the years. That being the case, this book is a treasure trove of information about guitar equipment and effects. Amps, tremolo bars, effects chains, various ways to hook up your equipment....it's all here. Overall, a fabulous book.

Kindle version is useless!

DON'T BUY IT FOR KINDLE!

The book content might be okay, however, I can't evaluate it, because the book is impossible to read on Kindle.
The conversion to Kindle has failed. The letter size is absolutely inconsistent, many parts of the content are practically unreadable because the letter size is extremely small, moreover, you can't change it.
I tried to enlarge the letter size on my Kindle using the menu, and even selecting the biggest letters, those tiny text parts didn't change at all.
So, you can see some unreadable small text for a couple of pages, than it comes some other pages with much larger one, then tiny ones again, etc.
Crappy work, Amazon, it's a shame!

a very fine book

If you're used to the usual paperback coding books with their cheap paper, poor copy editing, hand-drawn or screen shot figures, and error-riddled examples, this book will come as a shock. The high quality of the binding is immediately apparent. When open, the book lies flat. The paper is a little light weight and does allow some visual bleed-through, but still, the paper feels good. The figures are first-rate and obviously required a great deal of work. The code starts with the basics so no one need feel left behind, but advances nicely to intermediate topics. The topics progress logically and thoughtfully, and all the code examples are error-free and available online. Coding instructions are occasionlly broken up by interviews with well-known people. These and other references to leaders in the field give a nice sense of history, and reflect Reas', and perhaps Fry's?, academic background.
Sorry to be all gushy about this book. With software changing at the rate that it does, perhaps it's practical to make throw-away coding books. But at least they should be free of errors in the code. This book has everything going for it.

A useful introduction to Spivak

Stephen Morton's text on Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is part of a recent series put out by the Routledge Press, designed under the general editorial direction of Robert Eaglestone (Royal Holloway, University of London), to explore the most recent and exciting ideas in intellectual development during the past century or so. To this end, figures such as Martin Heidegger, Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault, Jean-Francios Lyotard, Jacques Derrida, Paul Ricouer, Friedrich Nietzsche and other influential thinkers in critical thought are highlighted in the series, planned to include more than 21 volumes in all.

Morton's text, following the pattern of the others, includes background information on Spivak and his significance, the key ideas and sources, and Spivak's continuing impact on other thinkers. As the series preface indicates, no critical thinker arises in a vacuum, so the context, influences and broader cultural environment are all important as a part of the study, something with which Nietzsche (one of the thinkers highlighted in this series) might have some argument.

Why is Spivak included in this series? Spivak is less well known in comparison with some of the thinkers in this series, but her impact in modern critical thinking has gone far beyond narrow intellectual confines to influence in many fields impacted with the thinking of the postmodern world; these include psychology, politics, literature, sociology, philosophy, linguistics, history and anthropology. The idea of postcolonial issues continues as a primary force in cultures that have long since gained political autonomy, because of the long-standing legacies imposed upon such cultures.

For example, Spivak recognizes the situation of irony in that she is product of the English-speaking, post-colonial situation in India, and now lives and teaches in the United States. However, her situation is also informed by the failure of the Indian socialism to deal the issues of women's equality, the underclass, and issues of tribalism and rural poverty. Spivak was heavily influenced by the major critical thinkers, particularly Derrida and de Man (Paul de Man was her dissertation director).

Key ideas that Morton highlights start with Theory, politics and the question of style. Spivak is very much different from another major thinker in post-colonial theory, Edward Said, in that she looks for contemporary literary theory to help reveal, rather than obscure, social and political relationships. In terms of deconstructionism, Spivak sees the ethical imperative to move this concept beyond academia and literary circles into socio-economic and political realms. In dealing with the Subaltern, the underclasses and less privileged people, she reworks the Marxist framework to look at histories that take a broader community into account - in particular, 'third world' women, one of the least visible and audible groups of people in the world. Morton also develops chapters on Spivak's idea of materialism, as well as her work on colonial and post-colonial issues in a specifically literary context.

One of the useful features of the text is the side-bar boxes inserted at various points. For example, during the discussion on Spivak's development of 'third world' women and Western feminist thought, there are brief discussions, set apart from the primary strand of the text, on the issues of essentialism, strategic essentialism, developing further these ideas should the reader not be familiar with them, or at least not in the way with which Spivak would be working with ideas derived from it. There are also brief boxes on Marx, Derrida and others, giving insight into key ideas from these thinkers as they relate to Spivak. Each section on a key idea spans approximately twenty pages, with a brief summary concluding each, which gives a recap of the ideas (and provides a handy reference).

The concluding chapter, After Spivak, highlights some key areas of development in relation to other thinkers, as well as points of possible exploration for the reader. Morton traces the influence of Spivak according to several areas: the future of postcolonial theory; how Marxist thought exists after Spivak; the ideas of transnational feminism in Butler, Alexander and Mohanty; and the idea of reading the subaltern in Parry, Varadharajan, Moore-Gilbert, and Bellamy.

As do the other volumes in this series, Morton concludes with an annotated bibliography of works by Spivak, and works on Lyotard by principal scholars. He also includes an internet resources link and a useful index.

While this series focuses intentionally upon critical literary theory and cultural studies, in fact this is only the starting point. As intellectual endeavours of every sort depend upon language, understanding, and interpretation, the thorough comprehension of how and why we know what we know is crucial.

About the Author
Douglas Reeman joined the Navy in 1941. He did convoy duty in the navy in the Atlantic, the Arctic, and the North Sea, and later served in motor torpedo boats. He has written over thirty novels under his own name and more than twenty best-selling historical novels featuring Richard Bolitho under the pseudonym Alexander Kent.

David Rintoul is a stage and television actor. A former student of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he has worked extensively with the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has also appeared regularly on BBC television, starring as Mr. Darcy in the 1980 adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" and as Doctor Finlay in the television series of the same name.

A Unique View of Small ships in War

In Danger's Hour is a story set in one of the Royal Navy's minesweepers during World War II. The crew is a mix of regular officers and Sailors (although they are a distinct minority) and of reservists. It is a story of how these men are molded and honed into a efficient weapon named HMS ROB ROY.
The story shows the ship in roles other than minesweeping, which was the lot of ships of this type. Escort work, invasion support at Sicily and Normandy, survivor search and rescue (burial more often than not)all came the way of ROB ROY.
We also see how the need for mine warfare vessels vastly outstripped the the ships on hand and fishing boats of all sorts were pressed into service. As is related in the book "they dumped out the fish and dumped us in." There is also mention made of US made minesweepers used by the RN.
There are interesting charecters in the book. I find the authors treatment of the Sailors as a key to the success of his writing. You don't see a few officers and a mass of nameless non-entities who make up the crew of the ship.
There is humor in the book as well. The poking of fun at the regulars by the reservists, the kidding amonst the chiefs in the privacy of their own mess all go towards making this book a fine story. Romantic interests are varied for several characters and most seem to work out well for the characters. It adds an element of depth to the authors creations.
Minesweeping was a dangerous, relentless and probably boring job that was done extremely well by ROB ROY and her sisters. The point made in the book is that once you finished the job, you had to turn around and do it all over again. This book puts you right in the thick of it. The only thing missing is the action of the ship in the sea and the constant wet and cold feeling of the crew. It is a must read for any student of the Second World War.

Minesweepers clear the seas for Allied victory

Douglas Reeman is perhaps the most profilic author of WWII sea yarns. He has quite obviously drawn upon his own service in the RN for much of his content and background. While his background provides authenticity, he does assume a greater knowledge of the ships than a lay reader would have.
The story focuses on the development of the relationships on a minesweeper following the death of its first officer. Relationships on shore are also explored to include the prerequisite love interests. The action scenes are vignettes against this backdrop.
One gets a sense of the tension between the RN and the RNR and RNVR although I think it was greater than Reeman indicates. Reeman also conveys the constant tension of finding and destroying or defusing mines while under the threat of attack from land, air or sea. Another tension is faced by men who go to war while their homes and families are being bombed. Reeman portrays all these various tensions and undercurrents well with the action peaking on June 6, 1944.
It may be nitpicking, but I had a few problems with the story. First, I don't think that British civilians were being killed in large numbers in late 1943- early 1944. This was after the Blitz and before the V weapons. Second, Reeman's description of the ship brings to mind the adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words". Why not include a drawing of a ship of the class described? Third, the characters are either; saintly, like the captain, in need of redemption/growth, like the first officer, or out-and-out bad. There are some loose ends that aren't tied and some that are tied up too neatly.
All in all this is a good read and should keep one turning the pages.

Kid friendly salat education

Nice work book that presents the technique and concept of salat in a light kid friendly manner. I worked with my son on it and he enjoyed it greatly!!
