It finally makes sense

After trying to figure out why the disenchantment with work as I hit 40, this book has explained it! Although some of the data used is out of date, the findings are still very valid.
I recommend it to those trying to figure out how to navigate through life.

Very insightful - still relevant today

At first I thought this book might not be relevant to me, some 20 years after it was written in a different country. Whilst some of the stereotypical behaviours and social "norms" are different, it is easy to see the translation of the insights to today and in a different country. And while the USA of the 70s is gone this book provided me with a better understanding of some of the (largely unconscious) behaviour of friends, parents and siblings, behaviours which I had not identified or simply taken for granted are now a little easier to fathom. As I read about each life stage I could identify it with those I know and this enabled me to forgive, empathise with and accept a lot which had previously left me hurt and baffled.
Although fairly young (35) I can already see some of the patterns at play which Gail describes. I don't care if it's not original work or if the lifetstyles are different and the social pressures altered, this book is still very applicable to those who can objectively view themselves and those around them.
This book looks at middle and upper middle class university graduates (called "college" graduates in the US) with primarily professional vocations in accounting, law, medicine etc (stangely little mention of engineers!). Also, I suspect the people are largely private school educated. Whilst people in other circustances might be under different pressures, I have seen similar crises and cycles in a wide range of people. A perceptive reader would learn from this book, nomatter their circumstances.

About the Author
Debbie Powers is Assistant Professor Emeritus in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science at Ball State University. She retired in 2006 after 30 years of teaching fitness and wellness classes at Ball State. Powers earned her MA in physical education at Ball State University and an additional 30 hours in Wellness Education. She received her BS in physical education and health from Indiana University. A former Division I college basketball player, Powers served as head women’s basketball coach at Ball State for 5 years. Before her tenure at Ball State she taught physical education and coached at the high school level. Powers’s teaching and research interests include wellness education, fitness, nutrition and weight management. Powers assisted in the development of the nationally recognized fitness/wellness requirement at Ball State University, and has given numerous national and regional presentations on the development, content, and assessment of this undergraduate core curriculum requirement. She has published articles and book chapters in the areas of wellness, assessment, and basketball. In retirement she continues to speak to community groups on a variety of wellness topics and teaches community fitness classes.

Sharon Burgess is a Physical Therapist and Assistant Professor Emeritus in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science at Ball State University. She retired in 2008 after teaching fitness and wellness classes for 32 years at Ball State. Burgess earned a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences and an MS in Physical Therapy at the University of Indianapolis. She received an MS in Sport Psychology/Motor Learning and a BS in Physical Education at Florida State University, where she was a nationally ranked distance runner and synchronized swimmer. She was head women’s track and cross-country coach at Ball State for 8 years. Publications include book chapters on bicycling and aquatic exercise for people with disabilities. Burgess has made presentations nationally and internationally, including teaching large lectures, aerobics, and strength training. Honor awards include Outstanding Tenured Teacher in the School of Physical Education and the Leadership Recognition Award from the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Burgess continues to work with athletes in orthopedic and sports physical therapy as a healthcare traveler.

Gwen Robbins recently retired as the Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Technology at Ball State University. She held academic rank in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science. Robbins earned her MA (physical education/biology) from Ball State University and an additional 45 hours in the area of Gerontology. She earned her BS (physical education/health/biology) from Indiana State University. Robbins was instrumental in the development of the nationally recognized fitness/wellness requirement at Ball State. She has given many national presentations and published several articles and book chapters about Ball State’s fitness/wellness program and assessment of this program. Robbins developed the 500-Yard Water Run, a cardiorespiratory endurance fitness test for non-swimming water exercisers, and the AquaCircuit, a pool circuit-training program. She has received honor awards from the Aquatic Council of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Robbins’s current research and in-demand presentations focus on the lifestyle changes of college students and university wellness course format and assessment.

Investigative journalist Dillon focuses on the chaotic years of 196990 to describe how British security forces attempted to infiltrate and destroy the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). The two sides fought a deadly, no-rules war with spies, informers, assassination, misinformation, and wholesale coverup. While the IRA tried to destabilize Northern Ireland by bombing, compiling weapons, and murdering British troops, British security forces established their own ``unofficial'' hit squads to identify and murder IRA operatives. Dillon brilliantly illuminates the deadly, murky underworld of spies and informers, meticulously describing how British intelligence would arrest ``vulnerable'' IRA members and ``turn'' them with threats of imprisonment, blackmail, torture, and monetary rewards. About the Author
Martin Dillon is a native of Belfast although educated in England. He lived in France for a time and returned to Northern Ireland to work as a journalist with the Irish News before joining the Belfast Telegraph. He also worked as a freelance journalist for several national newspapers and American periodicals. In 1973 he wrote Political Murder in Northern Ireland which is regarded as the definitive study of political assassination in Northern Ireland. His second book, Rogue Warrior of the SAS, is a biography of the Second World War hero, Lt. Col. Robert Blair Mayne, and is published by Arrow. The Shankill Butchers which was a bestseller in both Ireland and Britain was the first in his trilogy of books about Northern and Southern Ireland. Martin Dillon has written plays for BBC radio and television and has been Editor in Northern Ireland of many of the BBC's programmes in the area of current affairs. He now works for the BBC History Unit in London.

Best book I have read on Northern Ireland

There are many reasons to buy and admire Martin Dillon's 'The Dirty War,' which is nothing less than a monumental achievement in investigative journalism. Dillon peels the lid off a very large can of worms--two decades of undercover conflict between the IRA (Official and Provisional), British Army, RUC, Loyalists and assorted other players in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 1990. The author's painstaking research (including many first-hand interviews with participants) and scrupulous objectivity should make this book required reading in newsrooms and journalism schools everywhere. But it's not some dry exercise. A lot of 'The Dirty War' rivals the best non-fiction crime and detective writing. Dillon knows how to tell a story. He also has a knack of involving the reader in his exhaustive analysis of individual incidents and themes. When answers aren't evident, his not afraid to admit it; rather, he asks questions and draws us in. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the modern British Army and its counterterrorist tactics. But it's not an anti-British book and it's not an anti-IRA book. It IS continually fascinating and, refreshingly, has a strong moral compass in the author's value set to help the reader through the unpleasantness.

Dillon knows his Irish history

A good book by Dillon. He covers all parts of the Northern Irish Troubles, including British Army and security forces undercover actions and the way in which the IRA use devious "honeytraps" to tempt British Army men to their deaths. It also gives a section on the little known Loyalist paramilitary forces. I Liked this book as it was easy to read and gives a good insight into the past 30 years of the troubles. Anyone who is just getting into Irish history and is unsure about what to read, The Dirty War is an excellent starting point as, from the start, it gives you no illusions, even the title tells the truth.

No Hands Are Clean in The Dirty War

While it may seem strange for a book to leave one feeling both depressed and exhilarated, experiencing such paradoxical emotions is the norm with one of Martin Dillon's books. I have read three of his nonfiction works in the past year, most recently The Dirty War, and have come to the conclusion that I am not likely to find another writer/journalist who can get so close to the players in Northern Ireland's Troubles, elicit as much information from them, provide more complete complementary information from a vast array of written source material, and make it all coherent to the average reader. I had only sketchy knowledge of the Troubles before I started reading Dillon's works--I now find myself following his detailed accounts of events and trains of thought as though I had known them all my life. How exhilarating to be in commune with an author of such abilities!
And how depressing! It makes one weep to see the depths to which individuals and governments can sink to push their agendas, which range from the pursuit of profit to revenge to the perpetuation of a cynically unfair set of policies over a population. The last motive applies equally to illegal British interference in the internal affairs of Northern Ireland and to IRA paramilitaries who condemn the British justice system while pursuing their own perverse notion of justice that usually ends in the addition of another name to the "Disappeared" list. In the end, the Irish people are the pawns in a chess game without clear motive or end.
Maybe peace will come to Ireland some day. In The Dirty War and his other books, Martin Dillon reveals how high the odds are stacked against it--yet how to hope and work for it still.

Remember not to buy this book

It is certainly not worth its price. I was discouraged when I realized I couldn't return mine because I unfortunately filled out a small survey towards the beginning of the book in pen. The book is 270 pages of common sense. The author dwells on things that have no relation to developing a better memory. An entire chapter is devoted to making it clear that when we forget something people don't like us. Another on how eating nutritious foods and exercising is good for memory. Another chapter simply reaffirms us that we should trust our memory, as if we needed a boost of self confidence. More common sense taking a totally neutral stance, a little stress is good but not too much! a little coffee is okay but not too much! etc. I'm sure you can find something better, good luck!

A very thorough book on memory techniques

I've examined many memory-improvement books out there in the market. This book by far is the best-organized , and also the most complete. You can waste your money buying more fancy books or tapes on the subject, or you can save money by buying this book that summarizes all the known techniques in a very useful way. I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer on his assessment of this book.

Impractical

The ideas given in Super Memory are impractical. It introduces many memory aids for your mind. Yet, if you really think about it, instead of remembering these memory aids to remember things, then why don't you just write it down? His book does not teach you how to memorize a list of 100 very random characters like some other books. This book is worth skimming -- in your spare time. I rate it 2 stars.

Two were told by skeptics that they didn't even belong on the field. Yet it was these qualities that made them one of the most entertaining teams in franchise history. They didn't bunt to move runners along, steal bases to distract the opposing defense, or turn the double play. They just hit and hit until demoralized opponents cried uncle. They didn't win the World Series or even a division title. They couldn't be called champions, but they lived up to another title. They were the South Side Hitmen. Team owner Bill Veeck transformed a hapless 1976 ball club into contenders and big-time draws at the ticket box. New acquisitions Oscar Gamble, Richie Zisk, and Eric Soderholm led the team to a franchise record 192 home runs, while legendary broadcaster Harry Caray led Comskey Park fans through the seventh-inning stretch. The White Sox won 90 games that season (including 22 in an amazing month of July) and finished first in the hearts of baseball fans across the city's South Side.

South Side Hitmen is Dan Helpingstine's second White Sox book published by Arcadia. Chicago White Sox: 1959 and Beyond was released in 2004. Helpingstine is a freelance writer who is also working on a novel about a sportswriter covering a high school baseball season.

Take a trip back to the summer of '77 with the South Side Hitmen!

Awesome book chronicling a surprising yet memorable season of baseball on Chicago's South Side, full of Falstaff beer, softball-type uniforms with big wide collars, more Bill Veeck fan promotions than you could shake a stick at, astounding home runs from "rent-a-players" Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble, not to mention exciting play from favorites Jim Spencer, Steve Stone, Lamar Johnson, Wilbur Wood, Chet Lemon and Eric Soderholm ("the Poet Laureate of the White Sox"), and the beginnings of Comiskey Park organist Nancy Faust leading the "Na-Na Hey-Hey Goodbye" chant that Sox fans partake in to this day. Helpingstine provides a very informative narrative here, and this book contains one of the most bountiful collections of photographs you'll find from the mid-70s White Sox (most of which were generously provided by Leo Bauby). My favorites among these are a rare photograph of broadcaster Harry Caray with colleague Mary Shane (the first female play-by-play announcer in Major League history... her time in the White Sox booth was limited to the '77 season only), a photo of a Kansas City Royals player confiscating a fan's banner reading "WELCOME ANNUAL PENNANT CHOKERS", a picture of pitcher Terry Forster in the infamous shorts the Sox wore in an August, 1976 game (yes it was from the previous season but the photo still fits here), and a VERY rare photograph of Harry Caray with the Falstaff Beer mascot "Holy Cow". Unfortunately a division championship wasn't meant to be, and one by one the Hitmen moved on (the book closes with a list chronicling "the dismantling of the South Side Hitmen" and all the trades and losses to free agency). Despite that, the magic of the South Side Hitmen lives on with White Sox fans everywhere and this book captures everything we cherish from that one wild, wacky summer.

for those who loved the Sox of '77

Even without making the play-offs the 1977 White Sox will always hold a special place in my heart. If you feel the same way, or are just interested in baseball history - you will appreciate this book. Richie Zisk, Oscar Gamble, Wilbur Wood, etc...and those crazy-awful uniforms - a fun season to be sure. This book brings back many memories and any baseball fan has to appreciate that someone (Dan Helpingstine) would see how special it was. Great photos.

Interesting book on one of the few Good White Sox teams.

Better then I expected though still bit amateurishly written. Maybe that's partly why I liked it to... Great rare photos throughout. I realize that White Sox fans had very little to hang their hat on and that this '77 team was best of rare bunch of good teams. Poor owner Bill Veeck was renown for trading talent he knew he couldn't resign (remember this was the beginning of Free Agency era) but I applaud him for keeping team in Chicago. Fierce Hitters row (Zisk, Gamble, Lemon, Johnson, Spencer, Garr, Soderholm, Downing, etc) playing in that tiny ballpark but their pitching was abysmal.

I think the one thing that didn't like was "laziness" of writer/editor on one specific pic. It showed '77 All Star pic of Richie Zisk , with two players next to him. Well of course it noted (correctly) one was legendary Reggie Jackson. But the other it just described as "Red Sox player". Well that person wasn't exactly obscure or unidentifiable...it was Carl Yastrzemski!!! How do you miss that??? I literally had to double-take the caption underneath it, not believing they couldn't identify him in obvious photo of him,,,he wasn't blurred out, cut out, bad angle, etc...it was Yaz. That obvious "omission" (or an error...the guy was one of the most recognizable players in the 60s & 70s lol) took the book down a notch for me.

Sadly the South Side Hitmen lasted just one season...the last page showing a telltale of what happened to all the players, eventually moving on (not one player finished his career w/the White Sox - Chet Lemon remained the longest, just 4 yrs).

I'd recommend this hard-to-find book but would not pay exhorbitant amount. It has a nice small time feel to it...by a lifelong fan who really cherished this team. But as often happens, something gets lost in the translation - in this case poor sentence structure and poor editing - that keeps it a good, but not great read. For once I'd definitely like to note the photos...many were great. A few were blurry but didn't have issue as they showed a unique feel for this once-in-a-generation good White Sox team that the city embraced so well.
