Kindergarten-Grade 3-- This fictionalized picture book considers Columbus's first voyage from the point of view of a young unnamed sailor who is there solely because he needs a job. As the brief text describes the trip, the sailor's fearful and disgruntled thoughts are heard, with the recurring admission that, `` `I do need the job.' '' Meanwhile, the ink-and-watercolor illustrations filled with cartoonlike figures depict life aboard ship and on land. All are framed with a border of tiny ships and mermaids. A fold-out map shows the complete voyage and parts of North and South America and western Europe. On many of the pages a portion of the map is shown so that readers can identify the location of the ships at that time. On the whole, the paintings are appealing and occasionally humorous, but cannot compensate for the weakness of the text. While historical information is included, the book is primarily fiction, but not much happens. The main character neither knows nor cares what is going on around him and, as a result, it is hard to care about him. Steve Lowe's selections from The Log of Christopher Columbus (Philomel, 1992) provide a dramatic first-person account of the voyage without making it seem like just another day's work. --Jean H. About the Author

Eric W. Abelquist, PhD, CHP, is the executive vice president of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and deputy director of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). He helps oversee organizational best practices, program and business unit leadership, and community relations. He also works directly with the president/CEO to formulate organizational strategic objectives, manage key strategic initiatives, and advise on scientific and engineering issues that advance research and education opportunities. He was previously the associate director for Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification (IEAV) at ORAU, where he contributed to the development and implementation of the Multiagency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM). He received a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Best book if you want to get someone with mental illness, who doesn't believe they are ill, to stay in treatment. Highly recco.

I have been an advocate for people with the most serious mental illnesses for over 20 years. I read an early edition of this book and decided to read the latest edition. It is even better than I remember. This offers practical, tangible, useful advice for families (and practitioners) on how to get someone who has serious mental illness, but does not believe they are ill, to comply with treatment. There is simply no other book like it. Dr. Amador knows who his audience is (families of loved ones with serious mental illness) and what their problem is (getting their loved one to stay in treatment). While he describes the theoretical underpinnings (anosognosia), the true value of the book is it's actionable, practical, advice to solve that particular problem.

Pass On to Others Sooner rather than Later

Having read many books on bipolar and schizophrenia as we have gone through 4 years of trying to figure out what is wrong with our son, I landed on this fine book, way too late. But, I am devouring every page now. The photo on the jacket of the book really hits' home. How many times my son has left home are more than I can count. I would watch him leave and walk away from home, backpack in hand.

My son is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been in and out of treatment for 4 years. He is now in the hospital again, after having gone off of his medications, again, (and self medicating with marijuana and such) and close to having to do another stint at that state hospital. He is only 17, going on 18. I hope he reaches into adulthood. If he were to kill himself as he sometimes says he will do, having read this book and having tried everything within my power to help him, I will come out the other side with some solace for my heart. I know I am powerless to such a disease. Damn mental illness! It's as worse a curse as cancer.

I would put down every book you might be reading right now, even from Fuller Torrey, and read this first. Underline and keep going back to the reasoning behind the authors suggestions. (Some of the ideas in the book are usable when dealing with troubled people and youth in general.) Best of luck. I have recommend this book to the therapist now working with my son. I will send one in the mail to his current psychiatrist who could use this for her practice. She is not connecting with my son and it's causing very slow movement in his progress.

I so appreciate the author updating the book as time goes on! Hugs to you and all.

How To Dialogue Successfully in a Different Reality

Over 6 million Americans suffer from with severe mental illness. Incredibly, 50% of these who do believe they don't. Clinically speaking, they do not have "insight" into their diseases. They experience what is technically called anosognosia. Previously thought to be a deliberate act of denial on the part of a patient, anosognosia is today considered to be caused by a neurological deficit, probably in the frontal lobe of the brain. Its presence is a symptom of the brain disorder, not a subconscious or willful psychological state.

Anosognosia can cause myriad problems for loved ones, their families, and society as a whole. A lack of insight results in treatment refusal. How could it not? Anyone who thinks they are not sick would understandably refuse diagnosis and treatment for what they do not acknowledge. Treatment refusal leads to medications non-compliance, which in turn can lead to more florid delusions or hallucinations. Personal hygiene can deteriorate. Isolation can increase. Especially when someone with a severe mental lacks insight and also abuses street drugs or alcohol, there is a heightened potential for violence in a small percentage of cases.

How can family members cope with a loved one lacking insight? How can they get a loved one needed help if the loved one doesn't acknowledge the need for help? Many family members in the maelstrom know the frustration of getting an oppositional loved one to do what might be good for them, at least as the family members perceive. Those in the earlier stages of the psychodysseys may feel particularly stressed the apparent futility of talking a loved one out of his delusions or into a treatment for an illness he refuses to believe he has.

In his classic work, I'm Not Sick; I Don't Need Help!, clinical psychologist and Columbia University professor Xavier Amador proposes a simple technique. It is called LEAP, for Listen, Empathize, Agree, and Partner. "Listen" means listening without commenting, disagreeing, or arguing. It is based in reflective listening, in which the listener drops his or her own agenda and redoubles efforts to understand the loved one, whatever his psychological idiosyncrasies. Amador stresses the three A's of good listening: apologize, acknowledge, agree. "Empathize" means displaying genuine emotion even when relating to a loved one's delusions. "Agree" means agreeing as a neutral observer, acknowledging that the loved one has personal choice and responsibility for his decisions. "Partner" is an undertaking with the loved one to achieve shared goals.

The LEAP technique is an amalgam of three therapies. From Carl Rogers' client-centered therapy is drawn the concept of reflective listening without judgment or opinion. From Aaron Beck's Cognitive Therapy come the ideas of collaboration, agenda setting, and cost-benefit analysis. From William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick's Motivational Interviewing derives the emphasis on the loved one keeping the locus of control for personal change.

Amador's approach is elegant in its simplicity. It is also authentically based in Amador's lived experience as younger brother to the late Henry Amador, a man with schizophrenia. (The evidently deep love that Amador felt for his brother is itself an inspiration for other family members with loved ones in similar circumstances.) I Am Not Sick; I Don't Help!, now in its 10th anniversary edition, is a classic text in the field of treatment of schizophrenia, an invaluable navigation tool for all families in the maelstrom of severe mental illness.

NOT MUCH INSIGHT

The book is actually too succinct; therefore not inputting much on how to actually develop the skills needed to effectively speed read and with comprehension. The information is too general. There is very little information to assist one in developing good speed reading techniques. I didn't learn much, if any at all; since I have read other author's materials that are definitely more informative and beneficial. The book actually has just about the same information as the other books introduced in the book subsequent to the speed reading chapters.

Read faster and with better comprehension and retention

I've always been a super fast reader anyway, but sometimes my retention isn't the greatest because I'm just skimming the book. I thought this might help me improve my speed while help me retain more of what I've read, and on that score it delivers. It talks about stuff I hadn't considered, like common hindrances to effective speed reading, and sub vocalization which I am guilty of but had no idea it could actually affect my reading. The advice offered is clear and concise and easy to implement. Lots of useful information packed into this short guide!

This book covered a bunch of techniques to improve the speed of reading. I started implementing them right away and the book gave step by step instructions on how to use each concept.

I doubled my reading speed the first day while keeping my comprehension around the same. Looking forward to seeing what I can max out at over time.

The book was laid out well, and was written in a way that allowed the reader to understand and use the ideas easily. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Chapter 4 includes a list of procedures and issues that need to be addressed prior to testing, along with sample instruction sheets, forms, and equipment lists to use in planning for the test. Also included are proper warm-up and pretest instructions that should be given to the participants prior to testing and descriptions of the official testing and scoring protocols.

Chapter 5 explains how to interpret test results and how to use the information to motivate participants to increase their activity levels and improve their performances.

The Senior Fitness Test helps professionals not only motivate older adults, but also assess the major physiological components of functional capacity so that emerging weaknesses can be detected and treated before causing serious functional limitations.

About the Author

Roberta E. Rikli, PhD, is professor and chair of the division of kinesiology and health promotion at California State University in Fullerton and is cofounder of the LifeSpan Wellness Program at Fullerton.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Rikli has done extensive work in physical performance assessment with a particular focus on senior fitness. She has published numerous scientific papers on her work and has made over 100 presentations at conferences and workshops in the United States, Germany, France, Finland, China, and Japan. She serves on the editorial boards of three scientific journals and is a regular reviewer for several others.

She holds professional memberships in numerous organizations including the International Society for Aging and Physical Activity; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); and the American Academy for Kinesiology and Physical Education.

Dr. Rikli lives in Orange, California, and enjoys hiking and playing tennis and golf.

C. Jessie Jones, PhD, is a professor of the division of kinesiology and health promotion at California State University in Fullerton and is codirector of the Center for Successful Aging at Fullerton.

Dr. Jones is internationally known for her research, program design, curriculum development, and instructor training in the field of exercise science and aging. She has taught senior fitness classes and conducted training workshops for senior fitness instructors for over 15 years. Her work has been covered in numerous publications and presented at conferences worldwide.

Her professional memberships include the Gerontological Society of America; the California Council for Gerontology and Geriatrics; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Dr. Jones also lives in Orange, California, where she enjoys hiking, playing golf, and dancing.

I am a health consultant to senior citizens. This book provides easy and effective tests to measure their aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility without sophisticated equiptment. I am grateful to the authors for their research and testing prior to publishing this tool for alerting seniors to their level of fitness.

I am writing this as a former student of Dr. Jones that now works with older adults. I know how much work Dr. Jones and Dr. Rikili did in publishing this book!

This test is so easy to understand for both the client and instructor. The equipment needed is minimal and inexpensive. This book is a highly recommended and a very wise investment for informing and motivating your senior clients!

A decent book but not for everyone...

I should have figured it out from the cover but I got this for myself and found that it's really intended for seniors living a much more sedentary life than I do. I ended up giving it to my 84 year old mother, who likes it a lot. If you're working out strenuously every day, the tests are going to be laughably easy, but if you're a retired desk jockey, you can probably benefit from it.

Inspiring and informative

I was overwhelmed with choices when I went looking for a book on house flipping. There are so many out there that it's hard to tell which book will be better than another. So, in all honesty, my friend convinced me to buy this book because of the "good looking guy on the cover". Not very scientific, but what a great choice it turned out to be. Once you get passed the "infomercial" feel of the beginning, the book is loaded with helpful information: How to chose a house; what formula to use to determine if the house can be profitable; making the deal; staging the finished house; color choices; curb appeal; re-sale strategies... The list goes on and on.

I highly recommend reading several book on the subject (do your homework) before entering into what is a risky endeavor and this book should be at the top of your 'must read' list.

About what I expected

I am a licensed Realtor in the state of Minnesota. I have never personally flipped a house but have sold several fixers to clients and have renovated the home I live in. I read this book hoping to get some good ideas so I can get more involved in real estate investing. Overall the book did have some good information, and I felt the best parts were mostly on staging and decorating. As other readers mentioned it was a really quick read. The reasons I didn't rate it five stars are:

1) I don't live in California and the book was too specific to California. I would've liked some examples of properties outside of La La Land where values aren't so ridiculous and the profits so unrealistic.

2) The author uses way too many exclamation points! The title is just one example! Overused exclamation points make the tone of the book seem more like a motivational book! Repeat after me: "I can successfully flip homes for a living if I put my mind to it! I will be a wealthy and successful real estate investor someday!"

3) At least half of the book didn't pertain to flipping and just discussed a lot of general homebuyer info. Again, this is good if that's what you're looking for. I wasn't and found myself skimming those sections. He also could've been a little more generic in description because in many states we don't close in escrow, we sign disclosures before an offer is accepted, and inspection and financing contingencies work a little differently than he explains.

3) Pretty sure Coldwell Banker Burnet paid him to plug them so often in the book. Using an agent is essential for many people, but what if you decide to do this full time... wouldn't it really be worth it to get a license and save yourself the commission on both sides? In some states where the profit off these flips is much lower, saving thousands on the commission is huge. I get that he's writing about his experience and what's worked for him, but he doesn't even mention the possibility.

4) Holy ego. He name drops, tells us how he has broken comps on every house he's flipped, and makes it seem like he's doing us a favor by writing this fantastic book full of his secrets.

5) I would've liked a few more horror stories with information on how to salvage your profit if a serious issue comes up after you own the house. Flipping is not as easy as he makes it seem. Although maybe he did address this and the exclamation points and overly enthusiastic language distracted me.

Again I did really like some aspects of this book and will definitely utilize some of the checklists and tips if I decide to flip a house. Like most other "make millions in real estate" books, there are a few things I will takeaway and a bunch of crap I will forget.

Fantastic, easy to read, complete book on flipping

"Find It, Fix It, Flip It" is an excellent book about the lucrative market of flipping real estate. Author Michael Corbett splits the book into 3 specific, logical chucks, specifically finding a flip candidate, how to go about fixing the property, and finally "flipping" it for profit.

The first section on finding flip worth properties was excellent. Michael does a very in-depth job of describing all of the different aspects of locating a property, performing analysis on the property to see if it could be profitable, creating a team, and surviving escrow. I was especially impressed with his profit calculator

Part two focuses on the repairs and renovations involved with the flip. The author does a fantastic job of splitting up all the various renovations that can be potentially done with the renovations that will result in profit upon sale of the property. I absolutely loved his sections on lifestyle upgrades, essentially renovations that will attractive a higher price due to the lifestyle the home gives.

Part three finishes up with the final flip. Here the focus is on dressing the home to attract buyers and create a warm atmosphere, and finally selling the house. Again I was very impressed with the ideas and lists that author Michael Corbett came up with.

In all, this was my first book on flipping, but I might not have to pick up any others. The lists and forms are fantastic and the book is complete. I highly recommend this book to the novice and the experienced flipper alike. 5 out of 5 stars.
