In a study at the University of Kentucky in 2009, patients were asked to drink at least 3 smoothies a day. After 18 weeks, the subjects lost an average of 16.4 percent of their body weight—up to 44 pounds!
When researchers at Columbia University crunched the numbers on six separate studies following dieters on either a smoothie-based plan (one or two smoothies a day) or a reduced-calorie plan, they found that both sets lost weight, but those on the smoothie-based plan experienced “significantly greater weight loss” at both the 3-month and 1-year marks. In a 2015 review of studies on weight-loss plans, researchers at Johns Hopkins reported that participants who used low-calorie meal-replacement drinks like smoothies lost more weight than other dieters over the course of 4 to 6 months.

10 Lbs in 10 days ...

I've never been one to have to worry about my weight. Five foot tall with an athletic build (with little effort), hovering around 100 lbs for forever years. Then menopause hit. Over the last few years, I gained 20 lbs, most of it in my trouble area - the belly. Or so, it seemed. 120 may not seem overweight to some, but as a small boned/framed, petite lady, it was like being pregnant two times over.

A little over four months ago I started to get a grip on it. Never a fan of diets (in theory), I started working out five times a week. A few Leslie Sansone walking videos three times a week and yoga/stretching on alternating weekdays. Since I've never really had to worry about what I ate, I didn't really make any major changes in my diet. It took me two months to snap out of that denial. So, it took me four months to lose 10 lbs.

I was feeling and looking better, but still wanting to get to my goal weight of 100, which is where I feel most comfortable physically. And my belly was still very much my trouble spot. I started losing momentum on the motivation train. After doing some research, I saw that the Zero Belly Smoothies was coming out in a week. David Zinczenko has been in the belly business for years, so of course, I'd heard of his passion and even though, I've never even had a smoothie, I liked the idea of no focused shopping and eating, AND the possibility of losing up to 16 pounds in 14 days.

It worked. Still working out five times a week (nothing hardcore) and replacing breakfast and dinner with Zero Belly Smoothies - eating pretty much what I wanted, yet sensibly, for lunch and on the weekends, I lost 10 lbs in 10 days, and my belly is as flat as its gonna get.

Tons of great recipes and more.

This book is full of delicious, filling smoothie recipes that will work for anyone. They are all vegan and gluten free. Many of them do use almond mill and/or nut butters, so if you have nut allergies you will have fewer choices. These smoothies are based on the Zero Belly Diet, so if you are on that diet this book will give you a ton more choices for how to do the diet. Also, it contains a pretty good summary of the diet, so you don't have to buy that book first before you can use this book.

Smoothies are delicious. My appetite was curbed. I lost 8 lbs my first week. Also found my craving for sweets was noticibly reduced as well as desire for alcoholic beverages. My favorite is the Apple Pi. Advice provide is very helpful and easy to implement.

A COMPLETE REVIEW

I went to the library and took out at least seven books about how to get my baby to sleep through the night, and this is by far the best book even though it is written by a layperson...if you take it with a grain of salt. I gave it four stars because of a few but important points that new mothers need to know about before following her plan which the author does not take into account. I also can't help but snort at " not impressed " buyers/readers who only give this book one star. Obviously the person giving this book one star has not read all the other books out there and then actually tried to follow the long and tedious advices found withing hundreds and hundreds of pages...

The Pros of this book:
1. It asks parents to put their relationship with their spouse/sanity/own need first. Then the babies. This is how a healthy child should be raised. Suzan stresses this point, and yes, it might offend parents that center their whole life around their child... so be forewarned.

2. It really is a short read, and is to the point. A sleep deprived mom who can't even remember where her left shoe is will be able to read this in one sitting

3. It outlines a schedule. It also teaches the parent how to get the baby on this or any other schedule that the parent decides to follow.

4. It works! I however feed my baby every 2-3 hours during the day, from 7 am to 7 pm only. The author should have mentioned this adjustment-if needed- and she does not.

Why schedule feeding and this book worked for me: My baby was in the 99th percentile for size when he was born and he was so hungry that i was feeding him every hour ( from start to start of the next feeding) ,and each feeding lasted 45 min, meaning that I had 15 minutes off every hour 24 hours a day. I am not kidding. I followed the new age" no schedule, feed any time he wants commonly preached currently practiced by the medical community method of feeding. I then almost drove off the highway with my baby from sleep deprivation. When he was four months old, I finally found this book. After two weeks of feeling like a monster mom, coming into the room every three minutes of him crying, he finally slept through the night. I mean the whole night. 12 hours. The next night he did the same, barely cried for 3 minutes, and fell asleep. He slept 12 hours- again. Now one year later, he still sleeps 12 hours a night .

Cons:
For super lactators out there ( you are one if using only a hand pump you get more than 6 oz out of ONE breast first thing in the morning). This schedule could potentially work, although feeding a baby only every four hours 4 times a day might not be enough for a very hungry baby. For mine ( because I tried this schedule) it did not work. He got grumpy and mean. But for my friend whose baby puked breast milk up constantly, this schedule actually made the baby stop puking the food up, and gave the baby less gas, cramps, as well as colic. He became a happy baby. My friend by the ways is a super lactator. This is why I only gave this book 4 stars - feeding a baby only every four hours will not work for all babies.
Also, beware if you are a mom like me who is not a super lactator. Your milk will slow down the second you stop waking up at night and stumbling like a zombie to feed the baby. This is because of hormones - something to do with feeding in the middle of your OWN sleep pattern causes a greater amount of milk to be produced. Also, feeding every two hours super charges the breast milk production of moms like me- who are not super lactators.

By the way, I rented a sensitive scale to weigh the baby before and after feedings to see if her theory actually works... and it does- to some degree. If you feed the baby every four hours and the baby is hungry, your milk production adjusts...but by not as much as she mentions in her book. I was able to raise mine from 3 or 2 oz to 5 oz. But I was never able to produce 6 oz during the half hour feedings. My friend however, raised hers from 10 to 12 oz.

No More CRY IT OUT!

My poor 4 year old had to go through cry-it-out a few times in order for us to help her sleep when she was a baby. It was miserable and I don't suggest it to anyone. Once we found this book (when she was still a baby) it was a game changer! No more cry it out, just lots of peaceful, restful, easy nights for both of us. I breastfed her exclusively, so it was a little less predictable (still had the occasional awake moment in the night).

With my second, now eleven months old, we incorporated the suggestions from this book from the get go. She was bottle-fed, so I was more aware of the amounts she was eating, and I suspect that aided in helping her sleep through the night (though I still 100% encourage breast feeding at all costs, even if it hinders sleep!!!). Ever since she was nine weeks old, she's slept twelve hours every single night with only a few exceptions when she was sick (lots of middle of the night cuddles and lovings on those nights).

I highly suggest this book to any tired mommy and daddy who doesn't want to subject their sweet baby to stress and tears. I believe with all my heart that learning to rest- to sleep- is a gift to everyone, and this book will quickly help aide in that life-lesson for everyone in your home!

Good advice that works

Don't worry so much about pumping and measuring. This can work if you're breastfeeding. Trust your baby to tell you when they're full and when they're hungry. The important part is that you start to stretch out the time between feeding to give your child enough time to get hungry and eat a full meal.

A testament to the power of finding strength in weakness

This powerfully written, yet simple book changed my life! In "The Wounded Healer," Nouwen addresses one of the main challenges of the human condition- our weaknesses. These wounds, as Nouwen refers to them, are so often viewed as sources of shame and guilt for us. He reminds us all, however, that these wounds, can be transformed into strengths, if we will allow them to be.
By accepting that we are human and addressing our human weaknesses, we can then turn them into helpful resources to extend the gift of emotional healing to others. Because, in order to reach people, we need a point of connection. We can all relate to experiences of emotional woundedness, and within appropriate relational boundaries, they can become instruments of healing.
Nouwen shares several stories, and conversations that he had with persons going through various experiences of emotional woundedness. One of the most poignant of these was a visit he made to a man who was about to go in for surgery to have a leg amputated. By offering himself as a compassionate listener, he was able to help the man find peace in the midst of a devastating loss.
A point of clarification that Nouwen makes well is that becoming a wounded healer does not mean that we dump all of our problems on people, or seek to wear them like badges. Instead, by being aware of our woundedness, and facing it, we can become more sensitized to the needs of the people around us- after all we are all subject to human imperfection.
If you are ready to find hope and a renewed perspective on helping others- read this book! I would highly recommend "The Wounded Healer" to all persons in caring professions, as well as anyone who just want to find peace in the midst of human challenges.

A necessary commentary on the life of a healer

Nouwen, in this classic work, explains how in one's weakness, one can still participate in the healing of others. A major theme of most of his books, Nouwen stresses that only in one's brokenness before God and humankind can people really transform community. Admittedly, the philosophy of the wounded healer offered at the beginning and end of the book gets a little thick, but both portions offer excellent insights that make it a great read. The great benefit of the book is the clear examples offered in the middle of the text. Examples of people dealing with terminal patients and the like really clarifie the condition that Nouwen addresses. A must-read for people in the helping professions and anyone else looking to impact people!

The Wounded Healer

Henri Nouwen has been blessed with true vision of the human condition. Mr. Nouwen has also been gifted with the answers to solve the condition of "Nuclear Man" and isolation. Anyone who is a minister or healer of any kind should read this book. It is a "must read". I appreciated Mr. Nouwen's synopsis' at the end of each chapter. This truly helped me to "drive the point home". I thank Mr. Nouwen for writing this book. I am presently reading his "Return of the Prodigal Son" book. Another "must read" book if one is interested in reaching the center of man.

Review: 'Will You Remember Me?' by Amanda Prowse

Poppy Day is a 32-year-old mother who is happily married to her husband Martin, who works in the army, and together they have two lovely children, Peg and Max. As a family, they have been through quite a lot and Poppy is incredibly happy to have Martin back home, safe and sound, for the time being. However, while Poppy is busy taking care of her kids and making sure Martin enjoys his time back at home, she forgets to take good care of herself and suddenly finds a lump growing on her breast. Their comfortable and familiar family life is suddenly turned upside down. Everyone knows that if there is one person strong enough to beat cancer it has to be Poppy, but what if the disease just doesn’t want to beaten?

The main character of this novel, Poppy, already appeared in Amanda Prowse’s ‘Poppy Day’, a book which I had not read before starting ‘Will You Remember Me?’. Even though I did occasionally wonder about things that had happened to the group of characters in the past, you can definitely read this book as a stand-alone. I have to warn you though, this story will break your heart, over and over again. Wow, I can’t remember the last time I read a book with so much emotion in it! I don’t easily cry while reading, but I have to admit I shed a few tears while getting through this novel. The emotions in it are so raw and realistic and I think every reader will be able to imagine themselves in a situation like the one Poppy and her family find themselves in and imagine how horrible it would be. The topic of the book actually hits quite close to home for me, which made it an even more intense read, especially since the authors deals with it in a beautiful but at the same time really honest and realistic way.

Amanda Prowse is an amazing author and she really touched me with her writing. There’s a simply wonderful cast of warm and easily loveable characters at the core of this book. Poppy and Martin make such an amazing couple and their two children, Peg and Maxy, are the cutest. While reading, I felt like a part of their little family and I don’t think anyone would be able to read this novel without caring for and warming to these characters. There were quite a few beautiful and really touching scenes in the book, and Amanda made it really easy to picture it all in my head and feel like I was standing there in the room with the characters. ‘Will You Remember Me?’ is a simply heartbreaking, well-written and incredibly emotional read; a book I definitely recommend, but make sure you have a box of tissues ready when you start!

An exceptionally moving novel

Poppy Day is in her early thirties and leads an ordinary but blissful life with her two young children and her husband, former childhood sweetheart Mart. They're not rich people and don't have an awful lot of possessions, but they do have each other and that is all that matters to them. Poppy may have once dreamed of a kidney-shaped pool and a diamond ring as big as an ice cube, but in truth she loves her simple life and the only thing that could possibly make her even happier is the return of her husband, who is touring with the army. So when he does comes back earlier than expected it's like Christmas has arrived early for the Cricket family and they make the most of it as they are not sure when he will be deployed again.

However, their happiness is short-lived when Poppy out of the blue finds a lump in her breast. Fearing the worst but still holding out hope, she doesn't unnecessarily want to scare her family so Poppy sets out to the doctor by herself for a proper examination. Not long after that initial terrifying visit her worst nightmare is confirmed; she has cancer. She's quickly absorbed in the routine of regular hospital visits, chemotherapy and lots of medicine to ease the aches and pains that suddenly overtake her previously seemingly healthy body. She tries to stay strong for her family, but when Poppy thinks that things couldn't get any worse, they do and the one thing she was always so certain of, her marriage, suddenly doesn't seem quite so solid anymore.

Every once in a while a book manages to grab me in its clutches with such a gripping storyline that I find it near impossible to put it down to do other things (like work, eat and sleep) and that was definitely the case with this compelling story. I kept finding myself picking it up to steal a few lines here and there, which is not exactly an effective way of reading a novel, but at least it satisfied my cravings for a few minutes.

This isn't the first time author Amanda Prowse has written about Poppy Day and her family, however this was the first novel I'd read with her protagonist. So while technically this is a sequel, it can be read perfectly well as a stand-alone. There is not much of the characters' history required and that which is, is explained within the story so the reader doesn't get lost along the way. Having said that, I came to care greatly for Poppy and her family, so if you have the time I highly recommend that you do start with the first novel, titled Poppy Day, before moving on to Will You Remember Me?

I find it incredibly daring of Prowse to take a character from a previous novel that readers no doubt have become very attached to only to, to put it bluntly, kill her off in the sequel. This is something that perhaps happens in Hollywood movies but not so much in books. In that respect it's probably better I hadn't read Poppy Day, as I already found this an incredibly difficult novel to read emotionally and that would've only been worse had I known Poppy longer than the few days it took me to read this book in its entirety.

I loved the strong Poppy, her wonderful children and her handsome husband. They may indeed have a simple life, but they made it the most of what they had. This is why I felt outraged with a twist in the story towards the end of the novel. I don't want to go into detail as that may spoil the enjoyment for those who have not read it yet, but let's just say I was very close to throwing the book against the wall in frustration. I found this one part of the story absolutely unfathomable (both the choices of the characters involved and Poppy's eventual response it), which is why this novel has 4 stars instead of 5.

Admittedly, if I'd done my research and known that Will You Remember Me? would be a cancer novel I probably would have avoided it as it hits very close to home and at the moment I prefer to escape from reality in the books that I read. However, I am very glad that I did pick up this stunning novel, because while the story was harrowing and emotionally draining it was also exceptionally moving and reading it was very cathartic. Amanda Prowse was written a beautiful story of family and love, which happens to have cancer at the heart of the novel, not the other way around.

This is one of my favourite reads so far,a very powerful storyline about the life of Poppy Day and how she deals with her illness. This book had me on the edge of my seat and at times welling up with tears at the injustices of a terrible disease and how it affects the whole family. A must read for any lover of this great author

About the Author
Misty E. Vermaat has more than 25 years of experience in the field of computer and information technology. In addition to consulting in the field, she was an Associate Professor at Purdue University Calumet, teaching or developing Microsoft Office, computer concepts, database management, systems analysis and design, and programming courses. Since 1990, Ms. Vermaat has led the development of the Shelly Cashman Series and has written or co-authored numerous Series textbooks, including many editions of DISCOVERING COMPUTERS, DISCOVERING COMPUTERS FUNDAMENTALS, and Microsoft Word books.

Susan L. Sebok is a retired professor at South Suburban College in South Holland, Illinois. She is also a licensed attorney. Ms. Sebok has co-authored several successful textbooks for the leading Shelly Cashman Series, including multiple versions of Microsoft PowerPoint and DISCOVERING COMPUTERS.

Steven M. Freund attended the University of Central Florida and serves as a leader instructor of various Microsoft Office, computer concepts, programming, and Internet technology courses throughout Central Florida. An integral author for the successful Shelly Cashman Series since 2001, he has presented at the annual customer conference, the Shelly Cashman Series Institute, as well as other customer events. Mr. Freund has co-authored multiple editions of DISCOVERING COMPUTERS, Mozilla Firefox, Windows Internet Explorer, Windows, Office, and Dreamweaver books. He has also written numerous successful instructor supplements.

Mark Frydenberg is a Senior Lecturer of Computer Information Systems at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He also serves as the Director of the university's CIS Learning and Technology Sandbox, a social learning space where students interact with technology and each other. Professor Frydenberg teaches courses in IT concepts, web development, and technology trends. His research focuses on flipped and collaborative learning and pedagogies for engaging students with technology. Professor Frydenberg frequently presents on teaching and learning with new technologies at conferences and training events throughout the US and Europe. He has also authored WEB 2.0 CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, one of the many successful texts in the popular Shelly Cashman Series.

In addition to co-authoring DISCOVERING COMPUTERS, Jennifer T. Campbell has written several other leading technology texts, including DISCOVERING THE INTERNET, WEB DESIGN: INTRODUCTORY, MICROSOFT EXPRESSION WEB INTRODUCTORY CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES, COMPUTER LITERACY BASICS: MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007 COMPANION, and MICROSOFT OFFICE QUICK REFERENCE POCKET GUIDE. Ms. Campbell has served integral roles in computer textbook publishing as an editor, author, and marketing manager. She holds a B.A. in English from The College of William and Mary.

On June 10, 2014, Senator Tom Coburn testified before a House subcommittee on Social Security Disability. In his testimony, Senator Coburn made an interesting comment and asked what he thought was a rhetorical question. The comment was that, "Michael Astrue was approved to be the head of Social Security. The message Congress gave him is get rid of the backlog. Guess what? He did. He didn't do it right but he got rid of a lot of the backlog while he was head of Social Security. Sloppy work. But he-and that became their impetus. It's not whether they are disabled or not, it's get rid of the case. And we created a demand on him. So, Congress, again, we need to look at our own house and we need to do continuing oversight, not just bullet oversight." The question was, "Why wasn't the Inspector General catching this?"

Assiduously researched documentation of changes in the adjucation of disability claims that is refreshingly fact based rather than ideological in nature. While presented in a way that is entertaining at times, the little recognized historical facts referenced in the book raise disturbing implications regarding disability adjucation for those of us who are citizens.

As a former Social Security Administrative Law Judge who retired in 2003, I found "The Disability Debacle" to be both interesting and very informative. Although I retired before the period described in the book, the Social Security Administration sadly has had a long history of attempts to interfere with the independence of the ALJs. I only hope that I would have had the courage and integrity to act as did Judge Henry and others who chose to uphold their oath as judges during this period.
