Our mission committee at church reviewed many texts on mission trips, but ultimately adopted this one as the text for a several month study on improving missions. Well worth the time to read, but may need some time digest the information between chapters. Powerful!

If D'Aveni were not a professor at Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School, one could easily imagine that his grandiloquent management guide was meant to be an absurdist spoof of a publishing subgenre not especially teeming with useful or readable works. Drawing almost wholly on secondary sources, however, the deadly earnest author has cobbled together a repetitious handbook that combines a fevered appraisal of a new menace supposedly convulsing the global marketplace with programmatic recommendations for combating it. According to D'Aveni, the present danger is hypercompetition, a notably merciless form of commercial conflict that can be conducted in a host of ways. By the author's account, preternaturally aggressive enterprises may seek to erode, neutralize, or (more likely) obliterate the comparative advantages of their rivals in areas such as market access, cost, know-how, quality, resources, and timing. Moving on from his anecdotal audit of the no-quarter games cutthroat companies play, D'Aveni identifies the distinguishing characteristics of hypercompetition. He then segues into another by-the-numbers exercise known as the New 7-S's, the collective designation for a series of interactive initiatives that may be employed to sustain momentum (rather than equilibrium) in operating environments subject to sudden change. Similar cases in point range from ensuring superior stakeholder satisfaction and strategic soothsaying through simultaneous and sequential strategic thrusts. Offered as well are tedious takes on such techniques as escalation-ladder analysis and price-quality mapping. A Case of Hyperrepetition

Although this book offers a useful compilation of tools, they are hardly original. D'Aveni simply draws--if not plagiarizes--most of his insights from many other books and cases on strategy that have been out there for decades. Many of the passages in D'Aveni's book seem to have been copied from Michael Porter's infamous triology on Competitive Strategy. For example, when D'Aveni lists the strongholds that a company can establish, he lists the very same Entry Barriers that Michael Porter listed in his book over a decade ago. Furthermore, most of the examples that are listed in the book are examples of companies that D'Aveni found in HBS cases--and not his own original case studies.
D'Aveni argues in his book that the environment in which companies compete has transformed into a hypercompetitive environment that breaks all the traditional rules of competition. This hypercompetitive environment has made it more difficult for companies to compete in the marketplace. He also argues that traditional frameworks (e.g., Porter's 5 Forces) of analysis are inadequate and that he has developed a new revolutionary set of analytical tools. However, there are two major flaws in D'Aveni's reasoning:
1. The nature of competition has always been this way. Granted, companies have become more sophisticated and faster when it comes to implementation, but this is simply an evolution and not a revolution.
2. Traditional tools of analysis are not static instruments that only look at a static competitive environment. They are only static, if you use them in such a way, e.g., Porter's 5 forces analysis can be used to evaluate multi-period competitive responses...
Finally, D'Aveni tries to develop his own analytical framework, which he calls the new 7 S's. But D'Aveni needs to do more than just try to associate his model with McKinsey's old 7 S's model. Although some of his S's are useful, most of his model (e.g., "strategic soothsaying") is not very intuitive or useful for critical analysis of an indust! ry.
In conclusion, D'Aveni's book disappoints because it offers seldomly original insights. If you are looking for more "revolutionary" material consider "Value Migration", "The Profit Zone", Michael Porter's trilogy, Jefferey Ellis' classical treay, or Jean-Pierre Jeannet's book on Global Strategies.

A new way of thinking

I had read Hypercompetiton recently and I realized changing our way of thinking about business is one of the biggest challenges of the end of the centuri. D'Avenis model is a breaktrough description about how the market realy works, and how the managers must become more agressive in order to survive to the atack of foreign new game players.

The idea of the unsustainability of the advantages - the core idea of the book- directly destroys Porter's traditional, builded arround researches made inthe 50's.

I strongly recomend this book to be readed by all the executives from a company that wants to become -or remain- a market leader. This is and all-new approach that can make the difference. It is maybe the most remarkable book the 90's has been produced.

Excellent, gets to the heart of true competitive advantage.

D'Aveni's view of competition in our global era is right on. Few competitive advantages are truly sustainable, and long-term strategic planning is ineffective. The only long-term sustainable competitive advantage comes from a firm's ability to create short-term advantages that span across numerous competitive arenas - from cost/quality, to know-how, to various types of stronghold positions, to financial muscle. How is that accomplished? By continually disrupting the status quo, changing the rules of the game, by taking an industry in new directions in which competitors' strengths become irrelevant. Strong recommend: lengthy book but "executive summary" is in the 35 page Introduction. Short form paperback version coming out?

a wonderful read and necessary corrective

This is the only biography of Bach to create a three dimensional figure out of him. Eidam's style is engaging, lively and (despite the over finicky qualms of an earlier reviewer) splendidly translated. Eidam necessarily chides earlier scholarship which has tended to leech the humanity out of Bach's story. He creates a portait built out of careful reading of sources, original scholarship, coupled with (and here lies Eidam's real contribution) an intelligent understanding of artistic creativity and its endless struggle against bureaucracy; which lies at the core of Bach's 'passion'.

It is no exaggeration that virtually all other biographers over the years have tended to sympathize in some way with Bach's tormentors: be they philistine provincial town councils, jealous colleagues, or bullying autocrats. Their message being that a genius of Bach's stature should have exhibited Job-like patience when all of his artistic drives where being delibrately subverted. Most other biographies are so desperate to read him as a product of his time that they inadvertantly attempt to minimize his originality and unique voice. Eidam corrects these misconceptions. His description of Bach's end and his widow's struggles may well move the reader to tears. This comes from clear scholarship and good writing, as well as a unique, genuine sympathy with the subject of the biography. Bach deserves as much.

Finally, Bach as a real person

Although I do not have a musicological background, I have loved the music of Bach for years and have read many of the extant biographies: Boyd, Wolff, Spitta, etc. Of all the biographies, I found Mr. Eidam's to be the best at creating an understanding of the man who created such divine music without perpetuating myths or attempting to explain Bach's personality based upon his musical art. Mr. Eidam admirably highlights the irony inherent in the fact that Bach produced such sublime art in the face of continual opposition from lesser intellects.
I did not find the language of the english translation to be distracting and found the work to be refreshingly free of musical theory that while interesting does not increase one's understanding of the man himself. Instead, the reader is left with a deep and abiding appreciation for Bach's untiring efforts, in the face of incredible opposition, to share with the world a miraculous music that only he could hear.

This book is a great read, filled with first-hand references, a story of how civil society, when joined in fight, informed, with great strategy, and with leadership of those most affected by this indiscriminate weapon - survivors, can succeed in doing what was deemed impossible - achieve a world wide ban on landmines. Inside stories, compelling testimonies and reflective insight make this book a knowledge-building treasure, and one any potential campaigner and advocate for social change should read and use as they are working to make the world a better place. The book is a great resource. Highly recommended.

The Story of a Modern Moral Victory

Ken Rutherford's history and analysis of the global movement to end the use of landmines combines two virtues: it is exhaustive and at the same time highly readable. The author's level of expertise on this topic is second to none: since his own near-death landmine injury he has been at the forefront of efforts to ban, control and destroy landmines in addition to being a pioneer in several programs to rehabilitate landmine victims around the world.

The book moves from the particular to the global by starting out with Ken's own experience. While he was an aid worker in Somalia in 1993, Ken's vehicle struck a landmine, injuring him severely. After a medical evacuation during which he nearly bled to death, one leg was amputated to save his life and the second one amputated several years later. But as the book makes abundantly clear, Ken Rutherford is a determined, hard-core optimist, tough as any prizefighter and capable of bouncing back from trauma to enter the struggle against landmines at the international level.

The fact that Ken Rutherford was employed by a nongovernmental aid agency is particularly relevant because of the crucial role NGOs played in adding momentum to the anti-landmine movement. The book details how, even though major states such as the US, China, India, Pakistan and Russia did not join the movement, a host of NGOs and mid-size states successfully brought the landmine ban to life despite the popularity of landmines as cheap, easy-to-use weapons. Beyond that, Rutherford analyzes the unprecedented nature of the movement as a popular force, aided by new advances in communications technology of the early 90s (fax machines and email), growing phenomenally by virtue of the firm convictions and tireless leadership of Jody Williams and Stephen Goose, among many others. The lessons learned are worth noting: The United Nations and the superpowers were not the movers and shakers here--they are portrayed as lethargic naysayers sidelined by the breadth and vigor of the moral majority. Much of the vitality of the landmine ban movement derived from survivors like Ken Rutherford, as well as from the many thousands who did not survive and whose deaths added potency to the urge to end the ugly legacy of buried explosives inflicted on innocent civilians.

At times "Disarming States" reads like a thriller: can a few boisterous protesters get enough attention to change the world? Or will the gargantuan leading nations maintain the status quo of indiscriminate murder and mutilation? We see behind the scenes in Washington, Oslo and Ottawa, we read activists' personal correspondence expressing frustration and disgust, and at the very end, Ken invites us into the convention hall to witness the final vote on the International Convention to Ban Landmines, as, against all odds, it becomes a reality. Since the late 1960's, Rick Fisher has created and shown his work nationally in museum and gallery exhibitions, public and private art commissions, original publications, and over a dozen permanent, architectural-scale sculptures in the greater Los Angeles area. As a Master of Fine Arts, Fisher's work encompasses a wide variety of media including sculpture, installations, printmaking, drawing, photography, illustration & design, and digital graphics. Surprisingly Relaxing!

This is a really fun coloring book for children and adults alike. The wavy drawings made possible by the 'Udder' theme are mesmerizing and relaxing to fill in with a rainbow of colors. The resulting pictures are really wild and fun to look at.

Warning: you may be craving milkshakes by the end of this book!

Darcy Walker is Nothing but Verb and it's about to get her into trouble..again

Darcy is about to go on vacation with the Taylor's to Orlando. So what does Darcy do? She watches the newspapers to see if anything is happening down there. Well there is. A little boy named Cisco Medina was kidnapped and they have no leads. Darcy being the type of girl she is, is determined to find the little boy. All the while she has to lie and sneak around Dylan and dodged the advances of Kyd who lives next door. Darcy doesn't think it will be easy but she doesn't think it will be all bad. Well Darcy's middle name is trouble (it's really Winston) and before she knows it, she is crashing through windows and fighting off bad guys. Welcome to Darcyville.

Holy Crap!!! This book was good. I can never get enough of Darcy. She is always getting into trouble and you always know it's going to be big. Darcy doesn't do small. So here she is trying to solve another case while trying to stay alive.....again. You'd think a girl would learn but not Darcy. She is one heck of a chick. I would've peed my pants with some of the situations she gets herself into. She keeps me on my toes and that's the fun part. I loved every minute of this book!!!! Seriously, people you need Darcy Walker in your lives. You have no idea what you are missing. You have teenage angst, murder mysteries, kidnap victims, and so so much more packed into on awesome sized book. I'm not going to be a blabber mouth and give you all the deets because then you'd know what's going to happen and where is the fun in that??? One more thing before I go. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING AJ, WITH AN ENDING LIKE THAT?!?!?!? Do you like to torture me? Because that's what you are doing. I feel like a part of my soul is missing and it can only be replaced with the next book. I cried in this book, laughed out loud like an idiot (my grandmother thought I was insane) and I just love the adventures Darcy takes me to. So how about you dolls, go out and buy No Brainer to see what all the fuss is about. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!

Dylan, you sexy man flesh you. Please come to Alabama so I can love on you. :D *sobs* Ok now that I got that out LOL Dylan is Darcy's best friend and he plans to keep it that way. You mess with Darcy, you mess with him....and trust me you don't want to go down that road. You couldn't have a better friend than him, yes he yells at Darcy sometimes but that's because he cares. I want a Dylan in my life. ;)

Darcy, you are one crazy chick, who I love and adore. I'm talking like they are real...say something about it. LOL anyways she can't stay still and has diarrhea of the mouth in the most crucial of circumstances...like when a gun is pointed at her. I would like to be in her mind for a day and then yet again I don't. I don't think I would be able to handle it. When you can't find her solving crimes she is probably munching on a cookie. :D

"This book left me wanting so much more! Darcy never fails to make me laugh, want to cry at times and leave me completely mesmerized! Dylan and Darcy's relationships leaves me wanting to strangle both of them and push them together all at once! I read this book in a days time. I could not put it down! I fell in love with the characters in the first book and fell even harder in this one! I love going to Darcyville and am so ready for my next vacation/investigation or whatever you want to call it there!! Love it!!!"

Still a Fan!! I need more Darcy Walker!

No Brainer pretty much picks up right where Grade A Stupid left off. Darcy Walker completes school and is going on vacation with Dylan Taylor and his family to Orlando. She does some research on the happenings of Orlando and sees an article about a 5 year old boy named Cisco Medina that has gone missing. Cisco has been missing for about 4 months and there have been no leads. Darcy decides that she is going to find Cisco while she is in Florida. She has 2 weeks to do it and she can't let the Taylors know what she's doing.

She's back at the hijinx of impersonating people, breaking and entering, consorting with suspicious people, etc. To make matters worse, Dylan's grandfather is a police officer and is working on a case that involves the mob. While she is trying to help him with his case, she is secretly trying to get his help with hers. There is no shortage of Darcy getting into trouble with the Taylors and the Federal government (after breaking into the FBI database). She also has unwanted attention from the Taylors neighbor's son, Kyd Knoblecker (soft k). Then, there's Dylan's weird behavior that makes her question his feelings for her as well as her feelings for him. Life is so complicated.

If you've read Grade A Stupid, then I don't have to tell you that No Brainer is an awesome book as well. I was still laughing out loud and shaking my head at the dumb things that Darcy would do. I can not stress to everyone enough that these books are so worth the read. A.J. Lape has a lifelong stalker now and I will be anxiously, albeit impatiently, awaiting the next Darcy Walker book!
