Great Source

I just received Modern Manners today, and have spent over an hour perusing it. Although I admit I haven't read every word, I am very impressed with the book. The format is pleasing, interesting and makes for a quick reference for many situations. The book, co-authored by a renowned etiquette expert and her granddaughter, covers topics ranging from dress, posture, introductions, how to mingle, and even how to shake hands. These may seem to be very simplistic areas, until you find yourself in a situation and you don't know what to wear, how to introduce your boss to a friend, how to feel comfortable at a social/business function, or dining at a table where there's more silverware in front of you than in your momma's silver drawer! The book also gives relevant information about other cultures including greetings, dining information and conversation distances. All of this being very relevant as international travel and trade increases. Many of the suggestions in the book not only cover what is proper socially, but gives wonderful suggestions for those who want to make a positive impression in the business world. Manners may not ever go out of style, but they do evolve. Many of the rules from Emily Post and Amy Vanderbilt, even though perfect for their time, are outdated. Ladies, we may still want to be treated special by our husbands, boyfriends, and male friends, but being catered to by men in the business world is not going to help us get ahead. This book addresses this need and shows women how to step up and show ourselves as equals (standing when someone enters, offering our hands for a firm shake, etc.). Don't get the idea from the last comment that this book is just for females, it has beneficial information for all!
I think this would be an excellent book for young men and women about to go to college or who are in college and will be entering the business world soon or those already in the business world.

A perfect guide for today's world

Delightfully written. A perfect guide to figuring out our new and somewhat tricky tech filled environment. Not only hitting on our new world but also embracing our past with the importance of a proper handshake, eye contact and making those around us feel important and appreciated. It will be my go to gift for this season for my friends and their children.

Good Book

Before I bought it I felt kind of apprehensive because Liv Tyler is a coauthor (I tend to shy away from how-to books written by celebrities) but Liv Tyler's contribution to the book isn't that significant and the blurbs she does have on there are kind of cute. Johnson seems very knowledgeable about the subject. All in all the book is pretty comprehensive. My only major issue is that apart from the basics it does very little to cover social media and email etiquette (so if your looking for advice on that I don't recommend you buy it ).

not an easy read and not for everyone

this is a more clinical study of the studies of compulisive shoppers and compulsive spenders..it gives lots of data on numbers .since there are not a lot of books out there on this subject in a clinical setting is the reason
I bought it...I like it but it might not be for everyone at its price..I was lucky to get it used..

Outstanding advice on people management

If you are looking for a quick introduction to the ideas of a number of thought-leaders on how to manage people, this book is a good resource. The ideas discussed in this book include:

Daniel Goleman: There are six leadership styles - coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching. The most effective leaders are able to change between these styles when appropriate.

Frederick Herzberg: Punishments and rewards are ineffective tools for motivating people. Instead, try enriching their jobs by removing controls, giving employees more information, and giving access to greater challenges.

Manzoni and Barsoux: Employees who are viewed as weak performers often live down to expectations because the supervisor's attempts at performance management result in worse rather than better performance.

Carol Walker: New managers often perform poorly because they have not learnt the skills of delegating, getting support from above, projecting confidence, focusing on the big picture, and giving constructive feedback.

Marcus Buckingham: Great managers do not try to change their employees. Instead, they tweak roles to capitalize on individual strengths, create personalised incentives, and tailor coaching to unique learning styles.

Kim and Mauborgne: Harmony in the workplace required fair process, including inviting input from employees affected by a decision, explaining the thinking behind decisions, and providing clear expectations.

Some of the articles were first published more than 20 years ago, but the principles which they espouse are yet to find their way into most workplaces. I highly recommend this book to any manager.

Must read for first time manager as well as seasoned person for fresh perspective

This book is collection of articles published in HBR that are still relevant today. Technology progressed but people, psychology and organizational behavior is still the same. Reading "Setup to Fail" paper one may remember instances in their career where they setup somebody for failure. It is truly empowering. For seasoned managers, it may offer some fresh insights into why people behave the way they do. All in all, good purchase.

What every Bible teacher should read.

This book is based on decades of thorough research in several fields, which lends credibility to the author's insights. Such as astronomy, the ancient Hebrew calendar, the Jewish festivals and the relationship between all three. Old Testament prophesies and the profetic meaning of theJewish festivals, all made sense in a new way. Time and again, while reading, I had moments of "enlightenment", eye-openers, that made me see things in a new lights. Mysteries that I had taken "on faith" though they puzzled me for 40 years, suddenly became clear and made sense against the well-worked out background of research.
Unfortunately, Michael Rood also makes some profound statements that were not explained, and are quite controversial such as stating the exact age of the earth down to a week.
At times I also found the tenure of his comments quite critical.
However, they don't take away from what he does clearly convey, and that is a recording of the life, movements, actions and background of the ministry of Jesus that make you look at what happened so long ago with fresh and deeper understanding. This is because what emerges clearly is that as non-Jewish followers of the Messiah, we tend to overlook the significance of everything that happened in it's profoundly Jewish context -- and what it means for the world-wide Christian churches.
That is why this book still deserves 5 stars. I believe every pastor, priest and anyone teaching from the Bible, should read it.

Very enlightening on the ministry of Jesus

I learned a lot that I did not know about the apostles ... How they followed Jesus when he first called them and then went home and then followed him again. I liked the perspective on turning water into wine and all the other miracles and how it was also done to purposely break the man made laws of the Pharisees and to show that GOD'S law is not to be added to. Also when he first read in the temple and read only two verses instead of the required (by man's added law) three. I thought it was very well documented.

This book is amazing! Worth every penny, and then some!

This book is amazing! When I first heard Michael Rood claim that Jesus' ministry was only 70 weeks (490 days) long instead of 3.5 years long, I didn't believe it. But I checked it out online and found that the 3.5-year ministry idea was based on only two verses, one of which (John 6:5) was not in the earliest copies of the gospel of John, and the other mentions an unnamed feast that the 3.5-year folks say was a Passover, even though it occurred only a few weeks after Passover, so it should be Shavuot (Pentecost). To test further, my daughter and I went through the gospel of John following his many time clues to see if we could calculate the length of Jesus' ministry and we calculated 450 days, so we were short by 40 days. Then my daughter called me to say, "We left out the 40 days in the wilderness!" That brought us up to 490 days exactly. After that, I bought Michael Rood's book. The exact chronology is only the beginning of the amazing insights and information in the Chronological Gospels. So I repeat: This book is amazing!

Great urban textbook

In the nineteenth century the church made a great commitment to overseas missions opening new works in many countries that had never heard the gospel. The new challenge in the twenty-first century is to reach the cities which are growing rapidly and the cities of the world are larger than they have ever been before. This book, "Cities: Missions' New Frontier," endeavors to guide the reader to reaching the cities of the world for Christ. Most of the book is written by Roger Greenway with six of the twenty chapters being written by Timothy Monsma. The authors come with different experiences giving the reader an idea of ministry in the United States as well as in the rest of the world, especially the southern half of the world with it's large and rapidly growing cities.

The beginning of the book give the biblical framework for ministry in the city. Greenway invites the reader to imagine what it would be like had sin not entered the world, then he focuses on the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21. This helps the reader focus on what the ideal is and exposes the problems in the city. Greenway explores the New Testament church in Antioch and how this urban church was a pattern of a great church and shaped the life of the early church and even today through the writings of the Apostle Paul. The great call upon the church is to find biblical solutions for urban needs.

There is some great teaching regarding ethnic changes in the city and how neighborhoods go through change. The authors arrange several chapters to cover a number of different topics relevant to urban ministry. There is teaching on how to do research in an urban context to find the best ways to minister in a community. There are other chapters that cover issues in the urban context such as poverty, the homeless, those working in the red-light district, raising a family while ministering in an urban setting and the pros and cons of a ministry owning their own building.

This book comes out of the rich ministry experience of the authors. The reader is informed as well as inspired to minister in this needy mission field.
