About the Author

Beautiful photos and illustrations

Beautiful photos and illustrations. Clear step-by-step instructions. Lots of projects for every woodworker from complete novices progressing in difficulty to quite challenging and inspiring. The marquetry itself can be done with very few tools. Many of the projects can be mounted on objects found at hobby shops like Michael's. Otherwise, some woodworking skills and power tools are needed to complete the beautiful trays, boxes and other objects on which the marquetry are mounted (hence the "and beyond"). This book is a great reference source for any woodworker at every level of expertise. Ken really knows his marquetry and wood craft!

About the Author
John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked as a school psychologist and currently teaches educational psychology every year at the undergraduate level. In 2006, John received the University of Texas at Dallas Excellence in teaching award. His research has included publications in the Journal of Educational Psychology that focus on the contextual aspects of affectively-toned cognition and children's self-regulatory behavior as well as teachers' perceptions of children from divorced families. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Developmental Psychology and Child Development. Doesn't include Connect!

Bought this book for my psychology class...figured I'd save $10 off the bookstore price. Turns out I am spending $30 more because it doesn't include the Connect code I need. Buy this somewhere else!

It smelled funny and alot of the pages were stuck together

I rented it and when I received it it had a spill on the bottom corner of the whole book. It smelled funny and alot of the pages were stuck together. First time I ever receive a rental in such bad condition. Specially for the money I paid! I had no choice but to make it work since my class had started.

Book is great condition. Just didn't come with the access code needed for the class. I thought it would come with it for the hefty price I paid. Ended up having to spend more on the code in addition.

The Daddy Diaries by Joshua Braff

Jay and his wife Jackie recently moved their family to Florida from California for her job. Jay will stay home with the kids while she brings home the paycheck. He reflects on that occasionally but, overall, he embraces his role in the family.

Jay’s kids (13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter) take to their new location quite differently. His son is sullen and removed while his daughter has a new best friend and busy social life. My heart went out to Jay as he tried so hard to help his son who seemed to be very unhappy. Having raised a son I wondered if it was depression or the onset of puberty – not an easy time either way.

Through his diary notes we see Jay navigate a variety of activities and incidents in his new location. The acerbic and witty (and sometimes stereotypical) observations had me either cringing or laughing. I found his perspective on the way adult males embrace their situations as fathers (or not) interesting. Jay never quits trying to do the right thing – and he’s seen plenty of examples of how not to act.

The Daddy Diaries is a very quick and easy read about the importance of fathers and family in all its modern versions. Recommended to fans of contemporary family fiction.

Great prose, good read

I heartily recommend Joshua Braff’s newest novel. It’s not often enough I sample a few short pages and find myself immediately struck by the author’s voice. I felt as if I’d been plucked up and set down in Tampa Bay. Since Jay, Jackie, and their two children, Alex and Tara, had just left California (and I live in California) it was easy to relate to how different Florida environs would seem.

Jay is adjusting, trying to adapt to a new life as a full-time dad. His thirteen-year-old son seems alienated and doesn’t fit in at his new school. His wife is often out of town on business. The only family member who appears to be assimilating is their young daughter.

You don’t run across all that many realistic, caring fathers in fiction anymore. Jay tries to do right by his family. He is a man, and naturally approaches his role as caretaker in a masculine fashion, but he deals with his children with a tenderness that I found both admirable and touching.

The relationship between Jay and Jackie runs deep, and their love and commitment keeps them closer than most couples would be in their situation.

Although this is a tale about a family, the narrative arc supplies plenty of tension and kept me turning the page.

A relatable, refreshing and funny read - truly enjoyed this!

Writer does a great job of capturing his inner voice and those fleeting thoughts that help parents navigate through the drama of everyday family life. Sarcastic, yet honest and tender.

Book was a nice escape for me, and a good reminder that you need to re-calibrate from time to time to get back to what is most important.

Highly recommend!

AMATEURISH, ELEMENTARY, TERRIBLE CHILDRENS BOOK !

I know I’m going to get blasted for this review, but the truth is the truth.
This book was a real shocker for me, especially ( if you can believe) Amptone recommended it!
Great book for KIDS, starting into the hobby (or art) of guitar.
Nor recommended for the seasoned pro, or advanced gear head.
Covers the obvious. It will insult your intelligence.
Stupid questions are posted & answered like:
“Why does my guitar keep breaking strings?”
Or, “what is the difference between a single 12” cabinet & a 4x12 cabinet?”
Are musicians really this dumb?
What’s really interesting is Eddie Van Halen posts a little endorsement statement
on the back cover…......Hmmm…… Really??

Packed with Info
By too many books
As far as I can tell, the author has a question and answer type column in Guitar World magazine and this book is a compilation of his column from over the years. That being the case, this book is a treasure trove of information about guitar equipment and effects. Amps, tremolo bars, effects chains, various ways to hook up your equipment....it's all here. Overall, a fabulous book.

Kindle version is useless!

DON'T BUY IT FOR KINDLE!

The book content might be okay, however, I can't evaluate it, because the book is impossible to read on Kindle.
The conversion to Kindle has failed. The letter size is absolutely inconsistent, many parts of the content are practically unreadable because the letter size is extremely small, moreover, you can't change it.
I tried to enlarge the letter size on my Kindle using the menu, and even selecting the biggest letters, those tiny text parts didn't change at all.
So, you can see some unreadable small text for a couple of pages, than it comes some other pages with much larger one, then tiny ones again, etc.
Crappy work, Amazon, it's a shame!

Casey Reas is Professor of Design Media Arts at UCLA. Ben Fry is Principal of Fathom, a design and software consultancy in Boston. Together, Reas and Fry cofounded Processing in 2001.

a very fine book

If you're used to the usual paperback coding books with their cheap paper, poor copy editing, hand-drawn or screen shot figures, and error-riddled examples, this book will come as a shock. The high quality of the binding is immediately apparent. When open, the book lies flat. The paper is a little light weight and does allow some visual bleed-through, but still, the paper feels good. The figures are first-rate and obviously required a great deal of work. The code starts with the basics so no one need feel left behind, but advances nicely to intermediate topics. The topics progress logically and thoughtfully, and all the code examples are error-free and available online. Coding instructions are occasionlly broken up by interviews with well-known people. These and other references to leaders in the field give a nice sense of history, and reflect Reas', and perhaps Fry's?, academic background.
Sorry to be all gushy about this book. With software changing at the rate that it does, perhaps it's practical to make throw-away coding books. But at least they should be free of errors in the code. This book has everything going for it.

Thorough without being overly advanced or difficult

The book was written by the language's creator, and if you are interested in Processing and already know somewhat what it is, and want to learn more, then this book is probably an essential text for you.
