The first part of the book takes students through the balance equation in the context of diffusive transport, be it momentum, energy, mass, or charge. Each chapter adds a term to the balance equation, highlighting the effects of that addition on the physical behavior of the system and the underlying mathematical description.

The second half of the book builds upon the balance equation description of diffusive transport by introducing convective transport terms, focusing on partial rather than ordinary differential equations. The Navier–Stokes and convective transport equations are derived from balance equations in both macroscopic and microscopic forms.

The second edition of this text is now enhanced by the use of finite element methods in the form of examples and extended homework problems. The best book for newcomers in the field! Modern didactics, incl. use of symbolic input, commercial COMSOL software.

Our library just obtained a copy of this new book. The text follows an unprecedented approach to teaching the subject, see the well explained Amazon book description. Early readers and learners of transport phenomena might have wondered how the partial differential vector/tensor equations found in Bird's BSL1 (the 'red bible') could be implemented with today's computers in order to solve simplified problems of practical interest. Other readers might ask themselves how theoretically found solutions of transport PDE's, in equation format plus 2-D graphical sketch format, can be verified or reproduced by numerical methods, e.g. through programming a complex code in MATLAB. Here comes Plawsky's into play: It bridges the gap between theory-only books (BSL1; Slattery) and numerical-only books ('computational transport phenomena', by Schiesser, Shyy, et al.) by using the super user-friendly coupled transport phenomena solver COMSOL, a commercial academic software simulation package which integrates all the latest numerical methods drawn from mathematics journals and interacts with the PC user in form of GUI-customizable partial differential vector/tensor equations to be manipulated. Knowledge of the implemented numerical methods can be helpful to understand the advanced program settings/options but is not required for the use of the software. The examples and end-of-chapter problems show how a theoretical solution is derived from the general governing equations (student's brain.. hot. result: a set of equations) and then, how COMSOL solves the same set of governing symbolic(!) equations on its own via internally implemented numerical methods (CPU.. hot) to produce the same result, in form of diverse graphical 3-D visualizations (plus numerical output). I can highly recommend this modern text to first learners of the subject matter who enjoy having their laptops do all the computational job (here: the solution of coupled(!) complex time-dependent sets of ODE's/PDE's as seen in the many tables of Bird's red bible). End of chapter references are extremely well selected and integrated into the text, although sometimes referring to older book editions - just for the chapter on radiative energy transport I am missing a referencing to the outstanding monograph by M. F. Modest.
A last tip: COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2a is learned fastest by hands on the various model library PDF's, e.g. Menu>>View>>Model Library>>CFD Module>>Single-Phase Tutorials>>gravity_tutorial>>Model PDF. After reading and following the detailed step-by-step GUI instructions of several such PDF's you should feel confident enough to do the proper reading (the full COMSOL Documentation pdf set).

Nice introduction to the night sky

Does a fine job of orienting new stargazers to the highlights of the constellations, with a basic list of observing targets for naked eye, binoculars, and small telescopes. Nice overview of the history of the constellations and the planets. It would benefit from a few more images or sketches of some of the observing targets it describes, eg some Messier objects. Overall recommended!

Excellent book for beginners and those who wish to expand there knowledge of the night sky. Very clear and concise writing. I would recommend it for those who have been using there computerized scopes and want to be able to pick there objects from their own knowledge of "What's up tonight"

An insightful, thorough guide to dowsing/divining for information and guidance

From the title of this book you may have a notion that this book teaches you to find intuitive guidance. Once you begin to read it you will quickly discover that this book focuses on a specific, methodical approach to accessing this beyond-conscious type of guidance. Dowsing, also referred to as divining, is an ancient practice of using tools such as rods and pendulums or one's own body as instruments to receive communication from an unconscious source. This book shares about the author's personal path leading her to use these techniques as well as the history of how dowsing has been practiced in ancient and modern times.

Having been a dowser myself for many years (applying various forms of dowsing and muscle response testing for healing work and other areas of guidance) I found this book to be clear and thorough in its discussion of dowsing methods and development of skill and confidence with these methods. The author provides good references and examples to help readers see the many ways in which divining and dowsing can be used. There are diagrams of dowsing tools and dowsing charts and a clear step-by-step outline of using this process and limiting conscious-mind interference.

Both experienced diviners and newcomers will find this book useful. This book is very accessible and is well-suited to introduce dowsing to people with little or no previous exposure to metaphysical practices. The title itself is open and inviting, making no reference to the specific practices but instead referring to what these methods help you accomplish.

Good guide for divining

I have to admit that I didn't fully understand what this book was about when I ordered it from the Vine program. I thought it was going to be about decision-making from a rational, cognitive, business-type perspective. It is not.

It is more new age and based on the ancient principle of divining. The author does a good job of explaining several systems of divining- from kinesiology (muscle testing) to using a pendulum, to using what she calls "chits"- little pieces of paper on which you have written options. As divining systems and books go, this one is well-written and provides step-by-step instructions which anyone can follow. So if you're into this type of prognostication and enjoy using divining techniques, you will find this book useful. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars.

I found it interesting, but I have a preference for more traditional problem-solving and decision-making systems so this book didn't work for me.

Divine Your Own Answers

I don't know what I'd do if I didn't use a form of divination to make decisions with all the possibilities available to me in terms of work, play, social activities, health care, etc. I'd be totally overwhelmed! Instead, I use muscle testing, also called kinesiology, which can be done anywhere--in a store when deciding about vitamins, in the car when deciding what route to take, and at home when having a look at scheduling and the lengthy to-do list.

Meg Lundstrom credits Machaelle Small Wright, founder of Perelandra, a nature research center, with developing the type of muscle testing described in What To Do When You Can't Decide. I, in fact, learned from a book by Wright many years ago. Wright says that anyone can muscle-test to come up with yes or no answers because "it uses your electrical system and your muscles. If you are alive, you have these two things."

Lundstrom describes the "basic mechanics" of muscle testing with drawings of the circuit fingers, test fingers and testing position. This is a method for asking questions and getting simple yes or no answers and it's very portable.

The use of the pendulum, or pendling, is also described in the book and I had fun trying out some of the examples. The pendulum is used in "dousing," which has been used for many years "to measure the depth and flow rates of water, oil, and gas." For your own use, pendling works very well for making choices about food, a place to live (using a map), diagnosing mechanical problems and even recovering lost objects. Lundstrom includes various charts including one to make decisions around food. It includes the options of daily, often, occasionally, rarely, and never. The charts can be customized to accommodate any sorts of decisions you need to make.

Another form of divination (which Lundstrom discovered in India) is the use of chits. Chits are pieces of paper that you throw like the I Ching. You make up the chits yourself with all your options for solving a dilemma. The advantages of the chits are that they are not skewed by one's emotions.

I like Lundstrom's idea of keeping a divining log to chart your divining sessions. You'll get a sense of your accuracy that way. Lundstrom points out that the emphasis in her book is on "decision-making in the moment. It is not on fortune-telling."

The book approaches these forms of divination in a very clear way and makes them enticing to try. Everything is described in steps with examples from people who have used these divination techniques for many years with great success. A chapter on "Advanced Techniques" and "Advanced Tools" offer all sorts of possibilities for those who are gaining confidence with divination. I found it fun to try out some of the examples in the book with a small circle of women I invited over to get in touch with our "own wise selves."

Where do the answers come from? Lundstrom replies to that question by saying, "In the most concrete sense, when we divine, the answers are coming from within our body. When we ask a question, brain neurons fire, neurotransmitters flow, electrical currents spark, energy is released into muscle fibers, and something moves to let us know the response on a conscious level--a muscle weakens, a pendulum swings, a chit falls."

Lundstrom includes a "Troubleshooting Guide" and many resources for further study. There are many benefits to divining, including bypassing your conscious mind to access deeper wisdom, making life more efficient, and opening up adventurous possibilities.

This lovely, colorful volume, the first book devoted to Frieseke's work, accompanies a traveling exhibition of the artist's paintings. Nicholas Kilmer, Frieseke's grandson, contributes a biographical narrative that includes many personal letters and archival family photographs, and three noted scholars of American art (Barbara Weinberg, Virginia M. Meklenburg, and David Sellin) address the artist's stylistic tendencies. Their essays move chronologically through Frieseke's career, discussing his style from the period before 1910; his stays in Le Pouldu, Brittany in 1901 and in Giverny in 1905-20; and his last artistic phase, which lasted from the 1920s until his death in 1939. The authors examine the paintings produced at the height of Frieseke's Impressionist phase at Giverny not only in terms of Impressionist effects of color and light but also in relation to the decorative qualities of line, texture, and interlocking figures seen in the Nabis and Art Nouveau styles. They go on to point out the characteristics of Frieseke's lesser-known late paintings, which utilize a new realism, a less sensual line, harder edges, and modern dress. book is 10 1/4 x 12 1/4".....it has 218 pages.......from page 125 - 207 are full of color photos of art work, most of these are full page. They are landscapes and people paintings. There are about another 10 color photos of the art work on other pages too and there are many black & white photos too.

I love this book. I have admired Freiseke's work for years. It gives a wonderful history of his life as well as lovely portrait plates. I find myself leaving it within reach as I never get tired of it. I often 'see' something different in his paintings I hadn't noticed before. His garden scenes just make me happy. I only wish it had all his work in it!

I'm very pleased with this book. The printing and paper are high quality, the color images are very large, one per page so you are able to see the brush strokes clearly. Will be a great addition to your library.

This book provides a comprehensive guide both to the techniques used to obtain radiographs of the horse, and to radiographic interpretation. The second edition has been significantlyenlarged to include new information and many additional illustrations. With over 480 superb annotated radiographs and more than 100 interpretive line diagrams, the book combines the best features of a high quality atlas with those of a detailed textbook.

It presents the normal radiographic anatomy of the immature and mature horse, with normal variations, incidental findings and details of significant abnormalities. About the Author
Jan Butler
Jan has specialized in equine radiography and has 30 years experience in this field. In 1975 she joined the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket where she gained considerable experience working with many internationally renewed veterinary surgeons. Since 1997 she has been working in private practice at the Willesley Equine Clinic in Gloucestershire.

Chris Colles
Chris Colles qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1971. After 3 years in mixed practice (where he obtained a Part I Diploma in Radiology) he joined the Animal Health Trust as a clinician in 1975. He was awarded a PhD for work on Navicular Disease in 1981, and has carried out research in many areas of Equine Orthopaedic and radiology, having a particular interest in the horse’s foot. In 1988 he returned to practice, where he is a senior partner in Avonvale Veterinary Group, specializing in equine orthopaedics. He is recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery. Chris was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Farriers in 2000 in recognition of his research into conditions of the foot, and involvement with farriery education.

Sue Dyson
After qualifying from the University of Cambridge in 1980, Sue worked for a year at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, and then spent a year in private practice in Pennsylvania. Sue then joined the Centre for Equine Studies of the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, where she has specialized in lameness diagnosis and diagnostic imaging. Sue is recognized as a specialist in Equine Orthopaedics by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and holds the RCVS diploma in Equine Orthopaedics. She has published widely on lameness, radiography ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging.

Svend Kold
Svend qualified in 1981 in Copenhagen. He then spent over 10 years at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, where he completed his thesis on femoro-tibial subchondral bone cysts. After a sabbatical year at Colorado State University he joined the Willesley Equine Clinic, Gloucestershire, where he is now a partner. He specializes in lameness and orthopaedic surgery and is recognized as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. His time is spent mostly at the clinic seeing first opinion and referral cases. He published regularly on orthopaedic subjects.

Paul Poulos
Following graduation from the University of California at Davis in 1960, Paul founded a private practice. In 1972 he returned to Davis to specialize in radiology where he was awarded Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. He moved to the Royal Veterinary College of Stockholm, Sweden and was awarded a Veterinary Medicine Doctorate (PhD) for his thesis on osteochondrosis in 1977. He was Associate Professor at Radiology at the University of Utrecht, and on return to the USA, was Professor of Radiology at University of Florida. From 1983, he was chairman of the Department of Radiology. In 1990 Paul left academe to establish his own consulting practice, Poulos Veterinary Imaging, based in Ukiah, California. He has published widely on osteochondrosis, navicular disease and diseases of the fetlock.

A MUST FOR EVERY EQUINE VETERINARIAN

I am a private Equine veterinarian whom has been actively involved in Equine practice since I graduated in 1986. I have gone through this book in various places as I have not been able to own one for some unknown reason and my first impression of it was it is a must for every Equine Veterinarian. It contains alot of valuble information.Now thanks to the Distance Learning Programme in Equine Surgery, conducted by the Post-Graduate Foundation, University of Sdyney under Dr.Nick Kannegieter, I was able to get this book as it comes highly recommended in this programme.
