The color-drenched gardens and sun-dappled nudes by Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874-1939) have long been loved by admirers of American Impressionism, and his paintings are treasured in museum collections across the country. This beautiful and comprehensive volume--with more than one hundred color and almost eighty black-and-white plates--is the most ambitious ever devoted to his work. It is being published in conjunction with a major retrospective of the artist's work.
A biographical overview and a detailed chronology by the artist's grandson, including charming vintage photographs, provide much new information and correct several misconceptions about Frieseke's life and career. Three invaluable essays by leading scholars discuss the diverse stages of his work and place it in art historical context, detailing his experience as a student at Whistler's atelier in Paris and as a central member of the group of American expatriates who settled in Giverny, France, near the French master Monet. The book's groundbreaking scholarship casts new light on Frieseke, American Impressionism, and the art world at the turn of the last century.
The contributors are Nicholas Kilmer, guest curator of the exhibition and the artist's grandson; Virginia M. Mecklenburg, senior curator of painting and sculpture at the Smithsonian American Art Museum; David Sellin, art historian and author of American Painters in Brittany and Normandy; and H. Barbara Weinberg, curator of American painting and sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This lovely, colorful volume, the first book devoted to Frieseke's work, accompanies a traveling exhibition of the artist's paintings. Nicholas Kilmer, Frieseke's grandson, contributes a biographical narrative that includes many personal letters and archival family photographs, and three noted scholars of American art (Barbara Weinberg, Virginia M. Meklenburg, and David Sellin) address the artist's stylistic tendencies. Their essays move chronologically through Frieseke's career, discussing his style from the period before 1910; his stays in Le Pouldu, Brittany in 1901 and in Giverny in 1905-20; and his last artistic phase, which lasted from the 1920s until his death in 1939. The authors examine the paintings produced at the height of Frieseke's Impressionist phase at Giverny not only in terms of Impressionist effects of color and light but also in relation to the decorative qualities of line, texture, and interlocking figures seen in the Nabis and Art Nouveau styles. They go on to point out the characteristics of Frieseke's lesser-known late paintings, which utilize a new realism, a less sensual line, harder edges, and modern dress. Recommended for all libraries with art book collections. Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll. Lib., MA

"[This book] far exceeds any previous catalog of Frieseke's work. . . . The volume will be required reading for anyone studying that period in art history, and not just for those who enjoy the work of Frieseke. Highly ecommended."--Choice

Beautiful!!!

I love this book. I have admired Freiseke's work for years. It gives a wonderful history of his life as well as lovely portrait plates. I find myself leaving it within reach as I never get tired of it. I often 'see' something different in his paintings I hadn't noticed before. His garden scenes just make me happy. I only wish it had all his work in it!

I'm very pleased with this book. The printing and paper are high quality, the color images are very large, one per page so you are able to see the brush strokes clearly. Will be a great addition to your library.
